I just bought an external sound card

PHONIC sound card, connecting through firewire. I want to connect my guitar using that card to my computer with Guitar Rig 3, I was wondering just how to do so, should I connect it through an amp or directly connect the guitar to the sound card? and what should I do later? how do I make my guitar rig (which only let's me choose Kontrol Rig as an input although I only have the software and not the hardware) recognize the guitar?
