What's up with all the fake designer purses?

Aren't there laws of some sort that prohibit people to sell these items? I understand the look-a-likes, but they have different brand names. Yes, designer purses are expensive. Yes, not everyone can afford them. But, why do we have to make fake ones and try to pass them off as real ones? Also, does anyone know of a good site that tells you what to look out for in fakes? Something that tells you how to figure out if you've just been had?

Yes, there are laws against counterfeiting, but the police cannot keep up with the production of these fakes, everything from purses to watches to Tshirts that say "Gucci." Personally, I don't understand the appeal of fake merchandise. I think that you are better off just getting something nice that you can afford. When you see someone with a fake designer bag, don't you know it's fake? The real items are made with expensive materials and good quality sewing and styling. It's easy to tell them apart. The bottom line is you get what you pay for. Unless you are buying a designer item from a well known department store or a designer boutique, chances are, it's a fake.

It's funny that you mention Coach, because a few years back, my sister bought me a (supposedly) "real" Coach purse at a discount. It was (from the outside) nice and it was my favorite color (red). Well, the first time it rained, guess who's white shirt had a big pink dye mark on it from her authentic Coach purse? Needless to say, we both learned a lesson on that one. We still joke about that purse to this day.
