My darling husband is not very good at D.I.Y though he wants to try his hand at most things. We need some cupboards building which to me you need to be quite good at D.I.Y to even attempt this, do i let him get on with it to see what happens, or put my foot down now and tell hime NO!

With something like that I would put my foot down. Building some cupboards will be a pretty expensive task. If he tries to do it himself and fails to do it right then you might not have the money to get it done professionally. Smaller tasks I might still let him try if they are inexpensive, but I would not let him try an expensive task.

thats my point exactly, i just don't want hime to feel bad like he's not very good at something, but i don't want him to find out the hard way.. lol

You could maybe tell him that it would be a very time consuming task and that you would rather spend the time with him doing other things instead of him spending all his time on the project. Don't make it about his lack of ability at all.
