I went to a rough high school. There was a lot of racial tension, and that was part of it. Then later on we started getting Asian gangs, and one of my friends had a brother who wound up in prison for murder over gang stuff.
Early on, I had the problem of not really having a social group to protect me. I wouldn't take part in all the racial fighting that went on, because I hate bigotry. I was a religious outcast, a social outcast, and often a victim of violence... until I stopped being a victim and starting hurting people. After the first few people went to the hospital, people starting getting it in their heads that maybe I wasn't the girl to mess with.
When I was in high school, I spent a large amount of my time in the vice-principle's office. He understood a lot of my history that most people didn't, and so often he would pretend to be punishing me when really he was just letting me hang out and read a book. He always said "Let me guess, they touched you in a way you didn't like?" after he heard I'd beaten someone bloody, and 99% of the time that was the reason.
My junior and senior years a social group formed up around me, but in a way that caused it's own problems because then I had to deal with people that didn't like my friends, even if they didn't have anything against me personally. Still, it made things easier than it had been before, because I didn't have to always fight by myself. :)

In my high school, they would have tried to stuff you in a locker and shut the door (if you were small enough), if not they'd brace the bathroom stall. I wasn't in many fights, but the few I was in I made it worth my while. Otherwise, I'd have been in fights all the time. But I got a reputation as a really bad fighter, so most people left me alone. If you weren't in any fights, your High School wasn't very tough, especially if they left you alone.
