How do I use a urine collector on my 8 month old daughter?

My baby had intermitent fever for 3 days. But when we brought her to her pediatrician, she said there's nothing wrong with her. But to be sure, her pedia wants her urine be analyzed. She told us to buy Pediatric Urine bag. After 6 urine bags, I still haven't collected any. I gave her more fluids but her pee just goes in the diapers. This is getting frustrating. Help me people!!!

You could try putting her on a potty when you think she may do a pee, because at least then you can collect it in the bags. I'm not sure how else you will be able to get the urine in the bags because it isn't that easy to get out of a nappy and i don't think trying to get it out of a nappy would give a good test result anyway because it will have bits of the nappy in too. I know it may be frustrating and not easy to get your baby to do pee in a potty, but if you know when she normally pees more...... put her on a potty then and hope she does it. She probably wouldn't like it, but its worth a try. ~Joeys wife

i work in pathology here in australia, and have put on many pediatric bags on girls and boys.it is easy when you know how, just go to your local pathology rooms and ask one of the collectors to show you how it is done or to put it on for you.most bags have a peel off tape and they just stick on,you need to make sure the bag is open and sitting correctly before you place the diaper back on.go see you local pathology or the doctor ,they should help you.cheers sue

thanks, sue. asking for others help is not on my mind that time. my baby's pedia sounded like it's very easy, i should do it myself. baby is so hyper. i don't think she'd be patient enough to cooperate to stay in a sitting position for a very long period until she'd pee... i guess i just have to go to the clinic then. thanks!!!

Stupid question...why does the doctor just not use a catheter to collect a sample?

yeah, i wish that's what she suggested, to use a catheter. maybe they don't advise to use them since it's painful or something like that... aw... please give me a constructive answer...

I found this, but it even says that a catheter should be used for the bag collectors... http://www.coloplast.no/ECompany/NOMed/Homepage.nsf/0/1bc7c45fd5b355fec125720e0082175c/$FILE/ATT867BN/Baby%20urinpose.pdf

If you really need a catheter that is something your doctor - not you - should be inserting.

Back when I used it, I used soap and water to clean the genital area very well. The bag itself had an adhesive part on it that you put on the area (after it was dry). then give your daughter a drink and a few minutes later you have your sample. can you give us the make and model...so maybe we can look on the net for instructions and help bit.

http://www.calgarylabservices.com/files/CLSForms/MI6010.pdf this might help. But it seems like the problem is a sample that is too small. I work on a premie intensive care ward and we had to weigh diapers and wring the diapers out to get things like a specific gravity etc. Your doc should learn to work on small amounts.

Actually, you should call a local hospital. They have a new thing out that is a bag that surrounds their entire area, but it tapes on. It works really well. My daughter had to have that done and I refused to have her go through being catherized, so they put this bag on her that tapes around the entire area so that no pee can go into the diaper. it works, so you might wanna check into that. God bless and keep us posted

i hope so. i also don't want my gurl be catherized but if it needs to be done, then i guess i have no choice. it's for her own good.

I know what you mean, but i really think that it could be possible to get the other before having to have her catherized. i wish you the best and i'll be praying for your daughter. keep us posted. God bless

i don't know if this will help you but its what i had to do for my son when he was 10 months old. he wasn't well and they wanted a pee sample but you think i could it in the bag and stay in the bag til i got it off him...no way. so i asked my dr and they said i could use his potty. i wasn't potty training him yet but i did have one. they said as long as it was good and clean. like wash it out real good and dry it then let him pee into it and pour it into a sample collecting bottle. it took a while of just sitting there with him playing with toys, reading books, drinking lots of fluid but we got it. and the dr was happy with that. i hope that helps you

yeah, i could've done that too. but her pedia is very careful, to think she wants the newly released pee, that is the urine bag shouldn't stay long as 1 hour in the area, to prevent unwanted bacteria. oh dear... ^^ v

I'm just going to go along with everyone elses suggestions to get help from your doctor or other "professional". The only time I've had to use those bags was on an almost newborn boy...and between his age and the "outer plumbing" it wasn't very difficult but even he had some leakage. I can't even figure out how you're supposed to get it to work on a girl unless yoou have some really strong adhesive and double bag it just in case!

Yes, i think so too. newborns and up to 4 months don't turn around, crawl, stand up yet. But this one, 8 month? Oh my... very hyper baby. I can't keep her in 1 position for 2 whole minutes.

When i had to collect urine sample for my daughter, i used a type of bag that can be like pasted to the area... so it was very easy... i think you have to ask the doctor how to use the pediatric urine bag... with my doctor... she even showed us how to do it... It is quite frustrating but when you get the hold of it... it is quite easy...

i guess there's some kind of trick to be able to shoot the pee. the bags i use have circle adhesives on the opening. maybe i just don't fit them properly that's why they get to the diapers instead. i'll just have to bring her and the bags to the doctor then. thanks for sharing ^^ v

When my daughter had gastro the doc used a catheter to collect a urine sample, alot easier in my opinion, i would call and ask your pead if this is an option tell them your having no luck with the bags. Hope you have some luck.

hi! thanks for the advice and welcome!! yeah, i would want to ask her that if i could use a catheter, but then she seldom answers my text messages. it's funny and frustrating at the same time waiting for the pee to shoot in the bags hehe ^^ v
