I learn Spanish at university and I am going to be a teacher so the only and I think best advise to you is that you read. I suppose you know the rules already, I mean the way that words are read, that c in front of i and e is read as th and in front of a o u it's read k and similar stuff, just download some articles from internet or even a short story or buy a spanish magazine and read. At the biginning it is going to be difficult and probably you won't understand much but after few pages you'll start understanding. It was like that for me and I got this advise from my teacher at the first lesson. I know it was probably much easier for me because I am Italian and Italian and Spanish are very alike. It is going to be difficult but leaning a language usually is. You have several good dictionaries online so when you read the same text 2 or 3 times you look in the dictionary for some words that you don't understand but not all because the rest will just fit to its place after a while. Trust me this is the best way of self teaching than when you start understanding something just take a grammar, you have some basic rules of spanish in internet so that you don't have to spend money on that. And if you stick to this task after a while you'll be able to understand it very well. To learn to speak it talk to yourself in spanish. It's fine! Happy studying!

Theres a guy Michel Thomas ( I think that's how it's spelt) and he has a selection of CD's which is where I learnt my spanish... although I admit only listening to the 1st 2 so I didn't get very far.
The way he teaches you makes it so easy to remember, there's no writing things down & studying, it just sinks in. Coming from somebody who really can't grasp languages that's gotta be good.
Good luck, I hope you get further than I did, it realyl is a great language!

Learning a language is so much easier when you have your own tutor. I took French in high school for two years and made As and Bs, but don't remember much. It never sunk in or I just didn't learn what she was teaching. I took Spanish recently in college for two years and I got As each semester, but I can't speak it all that well. I too need someone I can go to for questions cuz when the semester is over there is no one around to answer those questions. Good luck finding someone.

This might not be the best advice but I actually have picked up some Spanish from watching soccer games occasionally. I know its tough to pick up the words because they talk so fast but after awhile I could understand the words for things like corner kick. Probably not what you're looking for but you if you can tolerate watching some of that type of tv you can pick up a decent amount of words.
I know the Rosetta Stone is touted by a lot of people but I think that it costs some decent money to buy.

I chose to learn Spanish because it is a very widely spoken language. But Chinese would also be a very good one to learn. I just want to be able to learn a language enough to travel there or atleast use it in work.
