Replacing hard drive

I started a discussion recently about problems with my laptop. I have a Toshiba Satellite and I'm pretty sure now the hard drive is fried, due to a bad fan that overheated. I am going to try to replace the hard drive (easy) and fan (hard) myself. So, my questions is this, if anyone knows. The original hard drive was 60GB, 4200rpm. As long as it is the same size and interface, can I put an 80GB or even 120GB in there? Does anyone know if my OS (Windows XP) will be on my recovery disk, or will I have to buy a new copy of XP?

you can go as large as you want in terms of size for your drive, as long as it's for your laptop it will fit just fine.. The recovery disk is supposed to have the modified XP on it that is to say the same XP you see when you fist got the laptop... My husband told me that. I couldn't have answered your question to save my life. I know nothing about computers and he has built several computers himself.

Hey, I'll take all the advice I can get! Sounds like you have a good source. I tried to call Toshiba for advice, but of course my computer is out of warranty, and they'll charge me $35 just for a phone call!

You need to make sure its the correct interface, most laptop drives are the same size so that shouldn't be a problem. And the only thing that makes your copy of XP unique is the serial number, so you can reinstall XP again from any disk as long as you put in your serial number.

u can put every hard drive in your laptop as long as it fit's in your laptop(just ask the sale'sman for advice on that and take the old hard drive with u they can still test it if it is broken or that the problem is in another place as for your windows xp, if u got that on disks u can buy a new hard disk make some particions and boot your laptop with your recovery disks in it and bamm u got yourself a laptop set just as u buyed it:p (well on screen on performence??:p how older how badder u're laptop will get )

I keep hearing about partitions. Not sure what those are or how to set them up.
