Cooking The Same Dang Thing

I sometimes get stuck in a rut cooking the same things over and over. I have my favorite comfort food recipes, the ones I know by heart, and the old family standbys that I've cooked since I was a kid. I like to change things up sometimes and cook new things. I wish you guys would give me a recipe from your culture, or your region, or something you enjoy that we otherwise might not know about. I love to cook good food and want some new ideas.

Hi darlin! Got a couple of ideas for ya - Cornish Hens, for one. I get them for $1.99 each at my local Aldi Store. You should be able to find them pretty much anywhere. They're like little individual chickens. You can stick part of an apple and onion into them, pre-heat the oven to 450, the turn it down to 375 to cook the hens. They should take about an hour or so. Yummy and inexpensive. And how about piccata made with either chicken or pork tenderloin? Simply cut medallions, or whatever comes off your knife, and pound them thin. In your skillet, bring some butter up to sizzling, (oops, forgot to have you flour the pieces), put the meat in to saute in the butter till done. Remove the meat, and to the butter add some finely chopped fresh parsley and fresh lemon juice. Stir it around for a couple of moments, then pour over the meat. Delicious! Simple, pretty easy, not too time consuming, can be inexpensive. It's different and quite refreshing. And I don't know about your family, but my tiny little family really loves beans. Cook up some pinto beans, add ham (in any form you choose, whether hocks, hamsteak, whatever) and serve with warm cornbread. Mmmm mmmmm good! I like to add chopped onions, some coffee (believe it or not) paprika and a tiny bit of sugar to mine and I keep cooking down the broth and adding bits of water till the broth becomes rich and thick. Simple but impressive. So there you have it. A little cooking idea from your pal here. If any of these appeal to you, I'd love to know how they went over with the family. Good luck, happy cooking!

Hi Nova dear, Cornish Game Hens!......I love them......I've cooked them in the past. I don't know why I always overlook them when I go shopping. I've made them with Apricot Sauce. I'm adding them to my grocery list. Piccata too. I've made that before. We do beans every now and again. YUM YUM.....Everything you mentioned hit a cord....See - it just takes someone else's ideas to turn the bulb on again.... Thanks darlin'....for the shot in the arm....or stew pot.....LOL

Always a pleasure, my dear! When I was out of town last week, I ended up making Cornish Hens for 8! Geez! I made an orange sauce for them, coincidentally. and piccata is so yummy. So glad to have refreshed your memory - I don't know how anyone who has kids does it! And usually, their little pallates are so limited as to what they'll try. Moms do have to be wizards, don't they? All I have is my hubby and myself (the cats don't eat people food, thank goodness) and I have a heck of a time coming up with new and different things to make. My only saving grace is that he cooks too. He's the gourmet in the family, so I get treated to stuff I wouldn't ordinarily think of or make. I am the home cooker - fried chicken, beans, steaks fried up in the iron skillet, etc. Tonight, however, I'm getting a little ambitious and making capellini with fresh made cream sauce and fresh scallops and shrimp. A little garlic bread on the side, and voila! If I come up with any more bright ideas that might work for the family, I'll post them for you. Good luck and happy cooking! And much love to you and yours.

I sincerely doubt you will be interested in this recipe, as it uses ingredients that so many people hate. But I love food, I love cooking, feasting, snacking, eating healthily, eating unhealthily, and I love cuisine from all over the world, but without a doubt this is my favorite recipe of all time forever, and one that I prepare any time I feel the need to pamper myself and get my creative juices flowing. It is called 'Spaghetti alla Puttanesca', Spaghetti in the style of the Wh0re, or more briefly 'Wh0re's Spaghetti'. Here is a link to a brief history of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puttanesca Pasta Puttanesca - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia And here is a link to the recipe, although I add clams to mine for their iron content, additionally I use 5 or 6 garlic cloves where the recipe only calls for 1 tsp, and I use a whole can of anchovies where the recipe only calls for 6 anchovy fillets. Anyway, here it is: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art15042.asp Spaghetti alla Puttanesca Recipe - Italian Food Man, I would bet money you don't prepare this recipe!!!

Hi zigzag.....Thank you Thank you..... How interesting....You bet? You loose.....I like everything in the recipe - even the anchovies. I'll try anything once. You never know if you're gonna like something until you try it and I'll try anything at least once. I'm putting it on the grocery list and gonna make it the first of next week. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Red beans and rice. Another staple in our home. A trick you might try with the anchovies is something it took years to learn,,,,,,rinse them in cold water before you add them to anything. (You might already know this - but I didn't). I started rinsing them a little and it knocked out some of the strong flavor. Love my anchovies......

I am very glad to lose the bet!!! I love anchovies but I didn't always. They used to make me gag but then I read that they were a good source of the omega fatty acids so i started putting one teeny weeny fillet in my salads and every time I got a piece in a bite I swear I thought I was gonna throw up! Now I crave them. Anyway that recipe is very easy to prepare. And a bottle of Cabernet goes wonderfully with it! Also another of my favorite recipes is Cajun Red Beans and rice, prepared with sausage and chicken... mmmm mmmm!

My family loves it when I do a baked potato bar! I bake some very large baking potatos. I set a gazillion things out to put on the potatos. Their favorites: black beans (rinsed and warmed), brocolli, grated cheese, sour cream, bacon bits, salsa (my favorite!), chives, chili, and whatever! EAch family member has their favorites! I love to use the potato as 'nacho chips' and add my favorite mexi toppings....tastes devine and better for me than nacho chips!

I think we all have that problem of getting into a rut cooking. We have been eating so much chicken since it is the cheapest that I'm sprouting feathers. Today I am making chili and cornbread for dinner. I also make fried rice pretty often it is a great way to stretch out meat. My favorite recipe is for Potato burgers. 2 lbs gr beef 3 cups shredded raw potatoes 1 diced onion 1 teaspoon chopped garlic salt and pepper mix all ingredients together and fry just like normal hamburgers. You can serve them on a bun if you'd like. We usually have them with salad and fruit. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

I think sometimes we all get caught in the cooking rut. We know what ingredients go where, how much. Sometimes it is quicker and easier. When we get in a hurry simple is better. But you asked for some new ideas. I saw this on the food network. Occasionally they have something exotic on. So here it is. 8 prickly (cactus) pears (3 pounds total) 1/2 cup simple syrup, recipe follows 2 tablespoons lime juice Line a baking sheet with plastic wrap. Wearing rubber gloves, wash the cactus pears and with paper towels, rub off any prickly fuzz left on the skin. Halve the pears lengthwise. Carefully scoop out the flesh and seeds and put them into a blender, leaving the thick shells intact. Put the shells onto the baking sheets and freeze them until hard, about 1 hour. Add the syrup and lime juice to the blender and puree until smooth. Taste and adjust the flavor with more syrup or lime juice, to taste. Strain the puree through a fine sieve, discarding any seeds and pulp. Pour the sorbet into the frozen shells, smoothing the surface so they are level. Cover with plastic wrap and return the filled shells to the freezer for at least 6 hours. Frozen sorbet shells may be wrapped individually in plastic wrap and kept in the freezer for 1 week. Simple Syrup: 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup water Put the sugar and water into a saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Remove from heat and cool before using. Syrup can be stored, covered, in the refrigerator, for 1 month. Can't vouch for it myself yet. But it's different.

Hi ersmommy. Exotic? I had to giggle. Because we live in an area where prickly pear cactus grows in abundance. The Spanish word for what you call exotic is Nopales. No - paul - is. Heck we eat Nopales in salad, cook them like green beans, in pie, in cake and we make jelly out of them and the fruit, of course in season.....I have a whole section in the cookbook about Nopales.

I love chicken wings!! I like to make my own hot wings. first cut your wings up, between drummettes and the wing. flour. then deep fry. let the wings drain on paper towels. instead of hot sauce, I like to buy the Tobasco sauce. Sprinkle the Tobasco over your fried chicken wings til coated. Next, in a big sauce pan, add half a bottle of Fat Free Italian dressing and a whole bottle of either French or Catalina dressing. let it come to a small boil. add chicken wings and let them cook in this sauce about 10-15 minutes. Next remove the wings and place them on a cookie sheet. make sure you spray the cookie sheet with non-stick spray. place the wings in the oven and let them cook about 15-20 minutes. The wings are already done, you just want the oven to cook them a little more to seep in the sauce. Take out the oven and Bam! ready to eat. These are more like gooey chicken wings with some kick. Sometimes they are hot, sometimes not.

Some years ago, when he was still alive (of course!) I used to love watching Justin Wilson's show of Cajun style cooking and got his recipe book. One of the recipes I love to make is his meat pies..the recipe calls for ground hamburger meat AND ground pork, but since I don't like pork just either used all ground beef, or even would switch and use all ground turkey meat. Serve it with some kind of hot & spicy rice and viola great meal..(even Spanish rice is great with it) Here's the link...Also the second one is the links to his other recipes as well http://www.justinwilson.com/recipes/recipes31.htm http://www.justinwilson.com/recipes/recipeslist.htm

Do share with us your old family standbys! we can trade old family standbys. For my hubby and i, our favourite dish is baked pasta. We boil the pasta (usually the corkscrew kind) and fry up some minced beef, throw in some diced defrosted valley chef sausages, and then add tomato sauce. After mixing the pasta in, we top off with mozzeralla cheese and stuff it into the oven at 180 C. After 15 minutes, the lovely cheese melts and browns and it's time to tuck in.

That sounds good squaretile. Our old standby dishes are things like chicken fried steak, chicken strips, fried or baked chicken, salisbury steak, roast, you know, things we grew up with.

I made something tonight called a Spicy Mexican Torte. It is really good. Preheat oven to 400 degrees 1/2 pound chorizo 1 onion chopped 2 cloves garlic Cook these things together in a pan. Add 1 can of green chillies Spray the bottom of a pie pan with Pam Place 2 flour tortillas in the bottom spread half of the chorizo mixture on them. Top with a cup of shredded montery jack cheese. Add 2 more tortillas and spread with refried beans. Add 2 more tortillas and cover with chopped fire roasted red peppers Add 2 more tortillas and top with the rest of chorizo mixture Cover and bake for 40 minutes. Uncover and top with 1 cup more cheese and continue to bake for 15 more minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Serve with sour cream, salsa, or guacamole.

Hi mad.....I never met a food I didn't like...LOL We eat just about anything. Of course there are a few things we don't eat for health reasons, but for the most part, we'll try anything at least once.
