Grocery Shopping....Something that I dread

Well this is the thing. I really don't like goin' 2 the grocery store, but I have 2 because my family has 2 eat. When you go 2 the store do you make out a list and stick 2 it or do you buy things that aren't on the list as well. I tend to do that alot. I do think that it's easier for me to make a list because then I will know what I can do as far as preparing meals are concerned. How do you do your shopping.

I usually grocery shop on Thursdays so on Wednesday I check the freezer and the cupboards for what we have on hand. Then I write out the menu for that weeks dinners. I then write my grocery list for the staples we need and the items needed to complete my menus. We are on a tight budget so I also shop with a calculator. We usually spend between 35.00 and 50.00 a week on groceries, paper products, laundry stuff and health and beauty products. If you are careful and very frugal it works out.

I usually shop for the month so I end up buying a variety of different things and then writning out the menu for the weeks dinners when I get back from shopping. We don't really have a budget when it comes to food so therefore we pretty much buy everything that we need as well as a few things that we may want.

If I write a list I either end up forgetting it in the car, at home, or believe it or not in my pocket!! I think just the process of writing the list helps me remember the main items to pick up. Other than that I never pick up just whats on my list there is always something extra that I purchase!

I actually love grocery shopping. My husband and I always go together. He hates grocery shopping though, it gives him anxiety sometimes for some reason.
I usually have a list of the things that I actually need. That way I know I am not forgetting anything important. Rarely do I stick to ONLY the list though.
If my husband is having anxiety it is easier to do because I tend to just grab what I need and get out.
If he is fine (usually when the store is less crowded) he always finds lots of extra junk that he wants.
If we are on a tight budget for the month, I can stretch out my money and get quite a bit of food for many meals. No splurging on those shopping trips.

I have to admit I used to just go in and pick up what I fancied, but as soon as I got it home I'd realise I hadn't actually picked up anything substantial, so now I have to be more strict with myself. I'll write down the food I need for meals throughout the week. I do allow myself luxuries but whilst trying to lose weight, get fit, quit smoking and everything else I promise myself every January, I'm becoming a lot harder on myself.
If I've got everything on the list then I allow myself to stray, just not too much.

When I have to shop for groceries I always make a list. I am on a budget and have to stay within my spending amount. I will write down what I need and how many I need. I only buy extras if I have the extra money, otherwise I only buy what is on my list.

That's good I wish I could do that all the time, but being that I usually have the extra money to shop with, I give in an tend to get things that aren't on the list as well.

sometimes when at random i cant make a lists..but for me its better to have one so that you cant forget some of the items that are important and also it is a great help for budgeting...since you have to stick to whats in your lists ,coz you know how much it will costs you..

Yeah, that seems to be true for me as well. I believe that is why I really don't like going anymore. Whenever I am pregnant I usually have my husband do all the shopping, but a good way to discover new and improved recipes for me anyway is by watching the food network channel. I really like Sandra Lee and Paula Dean they tend to make dishes that I know that my family will enjoy. Maybe if you are into things like that you could watch one of their shows and get some ideas.

I make a list of the meals that I am going to cook and then buy all I need to prepare them....also on the list are other things we need like condiments, paper products etc. I do also pick up other things but mostly i stick to my list so that with any luck i wont have to travel back again. I too hate grocery shopping!

I used to do that as well, but now it seems as though I really don't stick to it so I just stopped. I believe now that we have a new addition to the family I'll start it back because I often find myself not having a clue as to what we will eat for dinner.

I make a list but I always buy something extra. I just can't help feeling I'm forgetting something so I wander a bit and find a "must buy" to add to my cart... At least it's better than when the kids are with me and I wind up spending at least an extra $20 I wouldn't otherwise have spent.

Hiya,
I actually have a notebook that is used solely for shopping lists. I have in the past written the list out the night before shopping, but these days I just cheat and look through my other lists for ideas as to what we need.
BUT not only do I write a list and stick to it, as I am shopping i will then write what each thing cost next to the item and count it up at the end. There has been many a time that I have had to figure out what is not too necessary and put stuff back.
Its sucks being on a budget..but with 2 full time kids at home and 3 who come to us every second weekend, and usually most of the holidays, we do have to stick to it. For example I'm pretty sure that my shampoo will run out in about three days time! And 2 of our 5 kids are still in nappies!

Well, lenapoo I guez i do a bit of what you do! I make a list of the things that I need to buy in my mind. And when I go into a store, I buy only few of the things in mind and pick up things that were not to be bought. Sometimes, I coolly forget and get back home.
