Changing federal deduction for pay checks

My hubby got a job making a lot more, so I told him to take all the deductions and I would lower mine. OMG I was so shocked at the amount of money that was taken out of my check (I went from 4 deductions to 1). We don't want to owe in 2008, but I do like having money now.
Last week pre-change I had $3.76 for fed, this week it was $25.38 (I only work 30 hrs a week @ 13/hr so that is a huge decrease in pay for me; last week I only worked about 24 hours). Is it normal to have such a huge change in what is taken out when the deductions are modified?

I know exactly what you mean. My husband was on unemployment and didn't have any deductions taken out. He drew for a while and I am a little scared when we go to file taxes this year. I don't want to owe to the government either. We never have before.
It is normal to have such a huge difference in your check because the goverment takes more than thier fair share. We work and they take the money.

My experience with unemployment is that they normally don't pay you enough to get hit really hard with the taxes. I know you do a lot of online work I would worry more about getting hit hard there than on unemployment. Last year we got 1 1099 for around $2500 and I was completely shocked by how much tax the government took out.

I hope we don't get hit hard with the unemployment. He got pretty good money from it with no taxes taken out. I don't have to worry about filing taxes on my online earnings because I do not make enough form "one" site for them to send me a 1099. I don't have to claim it. I make alot from all of them put together though and don't have to file it, thank God.

Absolutely. I claim single and 1, if I claimed married and 0 I would make $20 more a week. Less back in taxes though. If you're a good saver, claim what you need, to even yourself out in the tax department at the end of the year and stick it in a savings account. I am not a good saver, I'd rather give the government a loan and take it back a year later and put it in the savings account. You must have kids? How could you claim 4 and still not pay in? Whew. So, if you're husband makes a lot more money and claims 4, and you have no kids, you will be paying in next year. Hope this helps!!

We have 1 kid that we don't even claim a lot on daycare - maybe $700 on daycare a year. We have never paid in but we also have a lot of deductions. I like getting money back but I don't like my paycheck being as low as it is. Since we get paid every week, I want to at least clear $300 so I don't feel like I am wasting my time. I think that I can up my number to 2 and as long as we stay below a certain amount this year (which we *should* as my job may be ending soon) we still should get money back in 2008.
