I am not really superstitious but I have always been amused by different superstitious beliefs I have heard from people from all over the world. Let me share some superstitious beliefs we have in the Philippines... * Never pay debts at night or in the evening for this wil bring about financial misfortune. * Do not have your picture taken when you are in groups of three because something bad (could be death) will happen to the one in the middle. * The bride-to-be should not see or meet with her groom the day / night before the wedding day because the wedding might not push through. I would really love to know more superstitious beliefs from your part of the world.

Our country abounds inthese beliefs and I shall list a few of them for you 1Do not get rid of your old magazines, general dumping waste on Fridays because Goddess Lakshmi[symbolising wealth and prosperity] will leave the house. 2.Do not clear cobwebs on Tuesdays and Wenesdays--the same reason above. 3. Do not ask a person ' where are you going?' when he is about to leave for some errand[however small it may be-even to the nearby shop. Apparently, his mission will fail. 4.Do not stand with wet hair , with water dripping all around. This should not be done. 5. Do not eat with your hair not braided and leaving it loose.[should not be done--is the only reason quoted.6. Do not part with money after the evening lamp is lit. [Goddess Laksmi will leave] There are auspicious dates for travel, and on specific days one is not supposedto travel. 6. Wednesday is equivalent to gold. Start a venture on Wednesday. 7. Do not stitch at night.[sew with aneedle] 8Do not melt butter and make this into Ghee on Fridays. 9Do not eat Amla on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday. 10Do not eat in the darkness with no lights on. 11. Do not sit on the threshold[here they mean the top one of four/five steps in old big houses--Lord MahaVishnu vanquished Hiranyakashyap , sitting on this threshold step, Comments; Many of these suited ancient households where they observed certain customs, where the family was large and cooking meals for a family was like a banquet,, [some activities like oil baths were taken by all femalemembers on Tuesdays and Fridays and this was not suited to the ceremonious activity of melting kilograms of butter on the same day when women had to take care of a number of children, assist them with their baths and provide food for the entire family under primitive conditions with no conveniences like a Gas stove mixer , grinder , etc.., Letting hair loose would see hair mixed in food items and obviously this was not desirable. So they just said that this SHOULD NOT BE DONE. similarly eating in the dark with the threat of amall creatures/insects/ around was not desirable. Obviously, all these superstitions originated in villages. There are others which people have not explained and defy logic.

Now, many of these beliefs are dismissed by the educated , thinking group of individuals. But, still in some backward areas, people do abide by these .

I'm from the US and I'm sure you could write a novel on superstitious beliefs you hear of. You aren't to walk under ladders. If you break a mirror you're to have seven years bad luck. A black cat is supposed to symbolize bad events. Some are crazy, but why not avoid the things when at all possible I always say. I simply try to not take it to the extreme!

You are right, there's nothing wrong if we consider these superstitious beliefs without really taking it to the extreme just like what fanatics do. =)

Interesting, except for the one about a groom not seeing the bride-to-be, I've never heard any of these. I'm in the US, when I was a kid my friends & I use to hold our breath when we passed a cemetery because someone said that a lost soul could enter your body if you breathed. I don't think that's a common one, as no one I know now did it as a kid. My friend's mother use to say that you should never buy your boyfriend or girlfriend shoes, or they'll walk out of your life.

Yes breaking a glass or a mirror would bring bad luck. Walking under a ladder would also bring bad luck. That one with the black cat we have that here too. That thing with the Bride and the groom not seeing eachother also familliar in my country. Else i don't know we all took them i guess from other countries.

You should never buy yourself opal or peacock feathers, as it is bad luck. If you drop your comb step on it or you will have bad luck. These are just a few that come to mind at the moment.

wow! my birthstone is opal... i wonder why they consider it bad luck to buy opal... perhaps it wouldn't be bad luck if opal is given to me as a gift... =)

I was very superstitious growing up. I don't know why. Not so much now. I try to stay far away from anything that resembles superstition to make my life easier. I can definitely understand the superstition about the bride and groom not seeing each other too close to the ceremony. See, if the bride and groom meet the night before/day of the wedding their might be a chance for a romance encounter. Then he or she might not feel compelled to go through with the wedding if their is no chemistry love wise.

A couple that i grew up with is Don't cross the path of a black cat, it is bad luck. Especially on Friday the 13th. The you bad luck is even worse. Don't open the umbrella inside any building, also brings bad luck. That's all i can think of.

I can only think of a couple right now, You mustn't cross somebody on the stairs because it's bad luck (my Mum always makes me walk back to the bottom so she can come down first) Never put your shoes on the table because it's bad luck and if you see a penny you have to pick it up for good luck.
