Did you know that you could cook your food in a wooden (or plastic) box with hay or straw in the bottom?
If you're using a crockpot (or a cookpot) then all you have to do is start the meal cooking, once it builds some heat, place the crockpot (unplugged) inside the haybox and cover with an in insulated lid. The heat contained in the food, especially water dense meals, will continue to cook the food because the insulation reduces the ability for the heat to escape. It takes more time, but if you're using a crockpot, chances are you're not worried about time.
This method is very eco-friendly, and uses significantly less energy than the stove or crockpot alone.
I don't think I would ever do it, maybe it I was retired with lotsa time, and I was bored...would you?

This would be a neat idea for camping. only heat up some fair size rocks and put them in the bottom of the box along with a dutch oven. The Indians would cook soup with hot rocks put in the leather pouch.
