is ups necessary wen u hv invertor

i have got an invertor at my home.is ups still necessary?
i have heard when power switches frm mains to invertor, there occurs a problem of spikes.
this does not occur with ups.but since ups and invertor work on same principle , why does spike problem occur only with invertor?
