it depends what you want it for!
if you want it to check your emails and surf the internet and do a bit of word processing then a laptop is ok.
plus also if you are on the move alot and you dont really have time to sit down, but your job requires you to be online or have use of a computer then a laptop is for you.
if you want to use power hungry programs, like say for video editing and playing games then a laptop isnt for you.
a desktop computer is more capable and upgradeable than a laptop.
i have found this when i owned a laptop, i wanted to upgrade parts in it, but i could not buy certain bits and do it.
but with a desktop computer, you just open it up and replace parts when and if needed.
the work i do requires me to use a desktop pc, because i use video editing software.
what would take 5 minutes on a desktop could take upto 45 minutes on a laptop.
in the end the choice is yours, i hope i have responded to your question answering your queries.

I recently purchased a Dell Laptop online through a one day sale and got a pretty good deal. 2GB of RAM, AMD Dual Core Processor, 15.4in LCD, DVD Burner, ATi 256MB Graphics, Vista Basic for about $750 USD.
It works very good but its a bit big and heavy. If your buying a laptop, I highly suggest a dual core processor and at least 2GB of RAM. Everything else is your choice - depending on whether you plan on doing any video editing or gaming.
