Kitchen appliances

I remember when I was a kid, Mom had a mixer. Then a can opener, a blender, an electric knife, salad shooter, an air popper for popcorn, a bread machine and now an electric bottle opener.
It seems like every time you change channels, there are new infomercials with more kitchen appliances, the George Foreman Grill, Set it and Forget oven, the Magic Bullet.
What appliances do you have? How many appliances do you have? (Just a guess is cool). How many were a total waste of money? Which would you recommend.
I love my crockpot and bread maker!

I am not a big fan of kitchen gadgets. Of course there are some such as a can opener that is hard to live without anymore. Even though I have a very nice electric mixer I still use a whisk when ever I can get away with it... I think much of my problem is the extra clean up these things make.
I do however have a dream, and that is I would love a Kitchen Aide all in one wonder machine. You know the kind I am talking about.. mixes cakes, kneads breads, has a pasta attachment, ice cream attachment. Emeril uses one all of the time. But I know me the new would wear off real soon and I would be back to mixing kneading and churning all by hand again.

Sounds like you're an old-fashioned gal like me...I love doing things by hand too. I used to have a really expensive food processor..a Robert Coupe...cost ten times more than most Cuisinarts..did I ever use it,..once maybe..I wound up preferring to chop or dice things by hand

Hi there Pye :))) My food processor sits in the highest cupboard in my kitchen. It has yellowed with age and to tell you the truth I can not even remember the last time I used it. I did in my early married and mothering years use it to make my own baby food. But yes, I tend to like my own hands when cooking. So did my mother. I use to say half of the wonderful tastes of her food was because of her hands. Even when making bread crumbs I toast and crumble into a bowl with my hands.
Does that make us old fashioned? Or just creatively artistic in our kitchens? I prefer to think the latter :)))

To quote you..."I use to say half of the wonderful tastes of her food was because of her hands. .."
What a lovely sentiment..maybe because the energy of "love" goes into the meal when using our hands instead of a machine???
That idea of passing one's energy into one's food making kind of reminds me of that book (and later movie) Like Water For Chocolate--ever see that? It was a Mexican made film and really beautiful--

What is your good old stove?
And a good set of knives and a good cutting board is two very essential cutting tools. But a food processor does come in handy, I will admit.

My stove is going to be 19 years old this spring...and it too is still working, would love to get a new one, but since this is working..I cant justify it.
IT is good that you can get along with 2 burners.

I love my dehydrator. I have crockpot, but I use it once a year. I have juice maker and I make home juice once a month....
My espresso maker is all time winner, I use it every day to make my morning coffee....

I am not real big on carrot juice, do you put anything else in it to make it taste better?
Good that you get enough fiber, I make sure I do, so many don't. I have often wonder if it is possible to eat too much fiber. I was told yes, but I don't see how it could be harmful.

Yes, coffee make is top dog here, but espresso is way over my head, I am quite happy with Mr. Coffee and Gevalia.
Crock pot we are big users. Home juicer doesn't do it for me - we need the fiber and that removes the fiber.
Dehydrator - that takes a fair amount of space.

Back when I was growing up, my mom only had a salad shooter, coffee pot, and microwave as far as kitchen appliances go. So everything that mixed, cut up, kneading and the like was all done by hand. It's basically how I do things today. Not one to have a lot of clutter in my kitchen so most kitchen appliances are worthless to me, that's just my opinion though. Plus I don't have the luxury of a dishwasher, so it's also less time my hands have to spend in the dish water, lol. Have always hated doing dishes.
I, however, was gifted one of those George Foremen grills over Christmas, and with some reluctance I tried it out and now am in love with the thing, and have cooked with it since the beginning of this year. That's basically the only other appliance I have besides my coffee pot, electric can opener, and microwave.

Wow, you are an appliance minimalist. I love my crock pot and the bread maker. There is nothing like starting a crock of onion soup and some bread in the morning and coming home to the wonderful smells and a dinner ready to go.
They are clutter, but they do make such good food so easy to make.

You are right, every time I turn around there's another kitchen appliance. I can't live without a microwave - I remember when my mom got her first one :) I also like electric can openers and my George Forman grill - mine is the small one but it works great as often it's just me cooking for myself.

We use the big one, just enough for 4 burgers. If my son is around, forget it, the poor thing goes into overdrive. For him, 4 burgers is the appetizer.
Yes, I forgot about the microwave, that seems to be something that is now a standard part of a kitchen.

IT is nice that your son thought of you, it shows he is beginning to grow up.
I love doing veggies on ours, it gives them a nice flavor and is different then steamed etc all of the time.

I actually just got mine last year well, year before now. I had wanted one for ages but seemed there was always something more important that demanded my money. Christmas 2006 my youngest son, my 'problem child' took part of his Christmas money from his father and bought one for me. Of course he ended up using it first and has used it as much or more than I but it was one of those rare moments that he thought of Mom and I very much appreciated the gift and the fact he knew I had wanted one.

LOL...I think I live in the caveman period as far as "gadgets" First, since my mom nor my grandmother were skilled at cooking...can we say, they could burn water??...they never were into any kind of gadgets to make cooking easier simply cause they didn't really cook much or at least not go into the trouble of cooking the way my great grandmother did and she did everything by scratch...now of course in my great-grandmother's day everything was done by hand...to mix things meant mixing by hand or whisking, etc. The only "electric" appliance my mom would get maybe would be an electric can opener--yup that was about as extravagant as she got (indicating what a lousy cook she was..heehee)
I take after my great grandmother as I inherited her cooking skills...not my grandmother's or mother's thank goodness! Over the many years of cooking I never really relied on gadgets either although do have a few conveniences, like a blender, food processor--yup that's about it for me..When I've made bread, made it the old fashioned way, no bread machine..same with making cakes, no mixer except my two hands..So like I said, most people would probably view me as living in the caveman period..hehe

We have a hand mixed that we use a lot and a crockpot that gets used a lot more and a lot of appliances that we use even less.
I used to work with someone who basically seemed to collect appliances, she had a lot that I had never heard of.

I have an electric wok, a crockpot, bread maker(motor now gone), a George Foreman grill (now no longer working), a Kitchen aid mixmaster, and a coffee maker. They are all useful, and the grill and the breadmaker I really used, which might account for them no longer working. I sort of wore them out. I have not bought anything on the Infomercial. I recommend the Kitchen Aid, Coffee maker, and the crockpot. I consider them as necessities.

I'm pretty basic. I don't have a lot of counter space either, so it's OK with me to go easy on the appliances, although it would be cool to have a bread maker. Besides the obvious microwave, I have a can opener and a blender. I never use the blender because of several reasons, but when I move, if I move, I hope to have room to use it on the counters. My mom loves her crockpot and is trying to get me to buy one, and until her bread machine broke (a gift from my sister) she used that a lot as well. I don't think I have any that are useless, and neither does she. She even loves the George Foreman because it does get rid of the fatty grease.

I hear you on no counter space, I put them away when I get done and then take them out when needed. Someday I hope to have a huge country kitchen, but for now I have to settle on city rinky-dink

I just bought me a "Ronco" Rotessorrie, and i really like it,it will bake a 10 lb turkey and a lot of other things, its great..Well i have a blender,an electric knife,I have a crock pot,i sold my bread maker ,i never used it..I have a rice cooker,A stand up mixer,a toaster..I got rid of my electric can opener and got a hand held kitchen aide, and i got rid of my popcorn popper and use the microwave kind...I just do not have room for all those appliances, my kitchen is small...I guess the most useless thing that i have is my blender,i never use it..

A friend of mine has one of those and she loves it. My son was about 13 or 14 when he saw it and he drove me nuts to get one--set it and forget it.
I like microwave popcorn too.
We use the blender and the $20 hand mixer a lot.

Let's see.....
We have a crock pot, Toaster oven, Deep Fryer, Microwave, and Toaster and Coffee Maker.....That's just the ones on my counter LOL
I also have a Blender and a Food Processor
I love my Crock Pot and also use my Toaster Oven a lot. My husband wanted the deep fryer but we hardly ever use it! Of course, we use the microwave :) The Food Processor and the Blender hardly ever see the light of day but I would love to own a bread maker so that I could make Gluten Free Bread for my son....When I was in college (Many years ago) I boarded with a family who had a bread maker, she would set it at night and in the morning would be the smell of hot fresh bread...there's nothing like it! :)
Now I'm hungry for fresh bread!!!!

Oh yes, forgot about the coffee makers, we have 2, he uses decaff but I don't. There are also juicers and coffee grinders, and griddles (those are real handy).
Yes, I knew the bread maker would be a drooler.

However, I thought I just must comeback and tell you about my failing to mention our Foreman Grill...It is used quite often as well...I don't know how I failed to mention that one!!!! I must say, if we get anymore appliances I think we shall have to move out inorder to let them move in! LOL
Have a great day with all of your appliances and I shall try not to let my take over! :)

I have quite a few appliances. Some of them I haven't even used yet. I got a Bread machine and a smoothie maker for Christmas but haven't had the chance to use them yet.
I have a dehydrator. I have a blender, mixer, a deep fryer that I never use, an electric can opener, a crock pot and I used to have a small grill until my husband dropped it and it broke.
I had a waffle maker, but it was such a pain to clean that I let my ex-husband keep it.

Waffle maker is fun, but it takes too long. I got rid of the deep fryer years ago, too unhealthy.
Love the bread maker, no smoothie maker. You must use it and give us an update on it

Funny to hear everyone tell what they have - and how much they DON"T use the items! Funny, but you can get along so well without all that stuff! I haven't had a blender in years - never used one. My husband just recently decided he had to have one for milk shakes. He bought one - $80 (I had a coupon or it would have been $100!) did he make a milkshake? no, he mixed a few margaritas and I washed it and put it away and it hasn't been out since! A bottle opener? How many things come in bottles these days anyway? Cans even come pull-top so why a can opener, get the hand winder and drop it in the drawer for the occassional time needed. I use my toaster oven constantly - no sense firing up that huge oven for a individual pizza to bake! I have a bread maker I use semi-regularly and a crock pot we use often. The only other appliance I have I just got for christmas - well, I wanted it, but got it and gave it to my husband. It is a Panini Grill. Has flat griddles, and the groved grill plates. The flat does pancakes, bacon, anything that needs a flat surface and the groved plates do steaks, hotdogs, anything you'd normally do on a grill. It is so great! And clean up is absolutely a breeze! It is so easy. I can clean the plates faster than a skillet! So I use that alot now. Other than that, just grab a skillet - odn't need all those new fangled contraptions!

I love my panini! I learned about it as I watch the Food Network alll the time. I loved seeing how they used it for making the sandwiches - those looked so good and the grilling of the bread would add such flavor! I saw them at Walmart for $50 so I grabed one for me and for my son - 2 grill plates and 2 flat plates - you don't need astove top now! Do pancakes, eggs, bacond, sandwiches, steaks, hamburgers, grill bread - pretty much you name it and you can use the panini grill! And so easy to clean up!!!
I gave one to my single son instead of doing the whole pots/pans and skillets thing, and he just loves it! Cooks, eats, drops the plates in the sink of water, and comes back later and nearly just rinses off the plates and put them back on the grill. So easy!!
I made steak, jack cheese, grilled onions (that I grilled on the flat plate, then switched plates - how easy!) and did the sandwich! Soooo goooood!!!!!

That made me laugh, the old air popper popcorn was a blast - replaced the old over the fire jiffy poff stuff that always seemed to burn. I couldn't live without my crockpot but I dont' have a lot of space so I got rid of some of the gadgets I didn't use so much (steamer, juicer, breadmaker). I'm not a gadget person, I don't mind a manual canopener and microwave popcorn works great for me!

It is something, how did we ever get along without all our gadgets. I have a bread machine too, I love it. Of course I have a stove, fridge, hand mixer, slow cooker, small food processer, can't forget the microwave. I have an electric can opened and still use the manuel kind. The other stuff I don't have. I don't have room to store all that stuff.

I'll admit it. I am addicted to small kitchen appliances. I might only use them once but I am addicted, non the less. The infomecial for the GT Express 101. I got it. My mom also has hers, but she actually uses hers often.
I probably have 15 small kitchen appliances. Not because it makes life any easier, because they don't. But, because they looked interesting to me. I know that I have a problem, but it isn't hurting anyone but myself.
I wonder...if they have meetings? I am not trying to be smart, just truthful.

I like the gt express 101, I have one that actually makes 4 of the little things at once. My son, who is in the navy wants one, he liked the stuff I made with it at home. I would always make extra, so in the morning, he would just grab one or 5 or so and pop in the microwave for breakfast.
I agree, if kitchen appliances are your only vice, then you are perfect.

fridge, stove, freezer are absolutes. I like my new crock pot but could do without it. I really like my toaster oven and it is used a lot!, the electric griddle is so nice to have for making up a lot of eggs or pancakes at once.... rarely use my mixer but just mix by hand... the kitchen aid blender is handy in the summer for crushing ice for drinks or making milk shakes. my folks gave me a magic bullet set I think it has 5 mixers, for Christmas a couple years ago and I have not yet used it, I think washing all those parts has intimidated me.

I understand with all of the parts, sometimes it takes longer to figure out how to get the appliance together then to do the job that you wanted it for.

The crock pot is the most important small appliance, we have 3 - 4,5 and 6 quarts. When you make soup in a crock pot, it is hard to have enough.
I think the can opener is getting less important with all of the pop top cans.

Hi. Debs_place. I have the usual, a refrigerator, stove, microwave and a dishwasher. All of them are in decent condition too. I don't have any of the updated appliances. I have an old T.V. that someone gave to my husband. It is in great condition and it plays well too. I would love to have a blender and a coffee pot someday.
