Disney Princess Birthday Cake...

As you've probably noticed already, yesterday was my eldest Granddaughter's sixteenth birthday. She wanted a Disney Princess Cake. That's all she told me... the rest was left up to me. I cheated a little with this one, in that I bought figurines for the top, but the rest, I did myself.
I baked a hexagonal, plain Victoria Sponge, marzipanned it and covered with roll-out icing, or Regalice as it is called, in an ivory colour. Then I mixed up some deep pink icing (her favourite colour) and piped around the bottom of the cake, and inscribed the top. I coloured some roll-out icing deep pink, and put a frill on each side of the cake, then, that dry, I cut and placed on ivory frills to go over top of the pink ones. That done, it was left to dry while I made six tiny rosebuds, and several frilly flowers. These, when dried out a bit were placed, rosebuds at the top of each frill, and the frilly flowers on the top of the cake. Then I piped little dots all around the frills. That was that... then I found a Cindrella Coach, a Snow White figurine, a Belle figurine and a Prince and placed these on top of the cake. Sprinkled it all with gold petal dust, through a tea strainer and it was done. My daughter in law had bought pink and white glittery candles which went quite well with everything, and Sarah was delighted with it.
Sixteen years old... thinks it should be a special birthday because she can leave school if she wants to. She's not, but that's beside the point. lol. Then, she wants Disney Princesses on her cake... I ask you!!!
Anyway, I know you'll want to see the pic, so here it is.:) I hope you like it.

No, of course her NANNA doesn't mind. I just thought as she was saying how grown-up she was, it was an odd choice. lol.
As for you and your Tinkerbell, well, like me, you've gone back in years. lol. That's different, cos we're allowed to be soppy! :)
Love and hugs. xxx

I'm surprised she wanted a Disney Princess at 16:)
And you've done a wonderful job...that cake looks great!
I can't bake and so my son never asks me to bake one for him and we just get one from a place we know that bakes lovely cakes and decorates them the way we want it.
But seriously, if I could...I would have loved to make one like the one you just made(psst...though I doubt if I could do half a good job as you!)

Everybody has their own forte, and I'm sure you do very well in other things where I wouldn't know where to start, but really, I think you probably talk yourself out of it. Have a go!!! It's really not as difficult as all that, and practice makes perfect, my friend.
Brightest Blessings.

Awwwww, thank you Lakota, my friend. Yes, you're right, the Princess cake could be leaving her childhood behind. She takes her exams at school this year, and is intending to go on to higher education, so, you could be right.
Brightest Blessings, my dear friend. xx

My daughter is turning 3 tomorrow and I got her a princess cake also. I didn't bake it though, I'm not that talented. I can't decorate a cake for anything, I'm too shakey! Yours is BEAUTIFUL! It looks a lot better than the store bought one I got for my daughter! Great job!

Wow Sweetheart that is wonderful - you are truly gifted! I know I have said it before but if you fancy visiting Scotland at the beginning of August you would make Niamhs birthday! lol Well done you , no wonder Sarah loved it! I still love pink and girly things and my eldest is 14 so I guess I understand where she is coming from xxx

Another beautiful cake you have made. you do such a wonderful job with them. i love seeing them. Its amazing how the kids these days when they get a bit older they like the little kid things. my 15 year old the other day was walking around with her brother's old ninja turtle bag from when he went to preschool. she asked me if i could get her one! and you see quite a few of the older girls going to school with little kids bags and lunch boxes. i think its funny. anyway i hope your granddaughter had a wonderful birthday. and i know they all would of been very proud of your wonderful work on the cake.
best wishes and take care. xxxx

Yes, it is quite funny how in one way, they want to appear grown-up but in another, they seem to hold onto their childhood, isn't it? But, as GardenGerty said, she may be saying goodbye to her childhood days because she thinks as she's school-leaving age, she should have a special birthday, to mark her adulthood.
They all had a wonderful time in London yesterday. My son had to spend two hours going round Hamley's with the younger one. Hamley's is a large toy store in London's West End, with seven floors of toys, toys, toys. Lol, she wanted to see everything and her Mum had to take her back there later, so she could show her something! Don't you just love 'em. :)
Brightest Blessings, on you and yours. xxx

Sounds like she wants to grow up on the one day, but stay little on the other. Mixed up feelings, but part of what makes the kids so dear to us. I hope it was a wonderful birthday for her.

Well yes, I think you might be right. She wanted a big party for her sixteenth, but her Mum and Dad quelled that and instead, she's getting a really special treat. She and a friend are being taken to London, for a makeover and photograph session. They'll all be going, Mum, Dad and sister included. Dad is going to take little one to Hamley's Store, which is London's big toy store, housing seven stories of toys. lol. He'll have a great time! Then, they're meeting back up for lunch, in Oxford Street, and making a whole day of it.
I don't think she can fail in having a great day, do you? Brightest Blessings.

That cake is absolutely gorgeous. You should start a buisness, you are really very talented.
I don't think it's fair that you judge your granddaughter's likes and interests because of her age. I'm almost 21 years old and I'm having a Little Mermaid cake for my wedding. I don't see anything wrong with liking Disney or fairy tales as you get older.

Oh, they tell me every birthday what they want on their cakes. lol. One year, the same Granddaughter wanted a cake with dalmatians on it, depicting 101 Dalmatians. Well, I couldn't make 101, but I made five or six dalmatian puppies and put some climbing over the ridge of the cake, one rolling, one running, and generally made them look to be playing mischievously. Then I iced in red, and that was one of the best birthday cakes I ever made. lol. It's surprising what you can do when you set your mind to it, but I need to be told what they want.
Brightest Blessings.

What a beautiful cake! I am sure she loved it! I made the cake for my older daughters first birthday. She had a Raggedy Ann theme. I plan on making the cake for my youngest daughter's second birthday as well. She will be having a Blue's Clues birthday because it is her favorite right now. I already have the plan all laid out for the cake.

How wonderful. It looks beautiful. I know your granddaughter must have appreciated it. When I was younger, my grandmother used to make(with my mothers help)train cakes. Individual cakes made up so when you put them together they made a wonderful long train. There were different cars too. Pink ones and blue ones. White cake and chocolate. They were terrific. Thank you for the reminding me.

The train cakes sound wonderful. I've made a racing car and a pile of individual building bricks, and also a Disney Princess Castle before now, but never a train. Oh, I remember making a Playbus cake for my Grandson for his fifth birthday, I think it was. lol.
I love making cakes. Thank you for your comments, and Brightest Blessings.

You did an awful lot of work on that cake but it looks beautiful. My daughter is turning 12 in a few months and she wants nothing to do with Disney anything that isn't High School Musical or Hanna Montana. Luckily I can still treat my soon to be 2 year old to a disney princess cake.

Lol... yes, they grow up all too quickly, don't they? I was quite surprised when she asked for Disney Princesses... I thought she might be into something more adult, but then I'm no example, because I still sit and watch the Disney videos at home, whether the kids are here or not! ha ha ha.
Brightest Blessings.

Thats a very pretty cake. I almost wouldn't want to ruin in by eating it. My parent would have killed me if I told them that I could leave school at 16 if I so chose to. Please encourage her to hang in there and graduate high school. My brother got into a bunch of trouble in highscool and ended up droping out and I have seen all the problems he has had from it. trust me A ged is not the same. Please do everything you can to help her graduate with her class. the 16th birthday should be celebrated as an entry point into adulthood as you are able to drive and date. In any case, Happy Birthday to your granddaughter and happy 16 years a grandparent.

She will be taking her A levels and leaving the school, this year, but she's working towards a career which requires college, if not university further education. We're in England, so I think the ages of leaving are perhaps slightly different.
Thank you for your comments on the cake, too. They're much appreciated. Brightest Blessings.
