cars and below zero windchills

Well here in Minnesota for the next few days we are experiencing an Artic front. We won't be above zero degrees at night for a predicted 10 days in a row. We may get lucky next Thursday and get above 10 degrees. Tonight it will be near -20 degrees with windchills nearing -50 degrees. This has promtped the Weather Service to issue Windchill advisories and warnings. At this cold with the windd=chills a person can experience frostbite in a 5 minute period. Discoloration of the skin and a burning feeling are the first signs of fropstbite. Now our cars also can "feel" the windchill. Park a car with the front end (radiator) away from the wind as this can cause the radiator to freeze easily. Also a recent oil change is always a great idea. With temps and air temps this cold old oil can and will gel to the point that it will affect the cars running and maybe not even start. Also it's a great idea in this type of frigid temps to not allow the gas tank to be under half full. At these temps a tank thats pretty full of air can build up water and freeze the fuel line as well. When I go out in this type of weather I am wearing my Startes Parka with insulated gloves, a stocking cap, and a scarf to keep as warm as possible. What do you do to prepare for this type of artic weather as far as yourself, your home, and or your automobile? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

We are expecting the same cold conditions here in Boston and I tell you I am sooooo happy that I don't have all of that to deal with. I do remember when I did and how horrible it was....something that I will never forget. I plan to stay inside where it's nice and warm until the weather gets more to my liking.....like May!

I hybernate like a bear. Lucky for us, its unusual to get that cold. Sometimes it does and its not pleasent when it does. I don't like it one bit. Add blankets to the bed, drip the faucets and pray the pipes don't freeze. Pray that the car starts, and if it doesn't, call AAA. Bundle up when going out. Its supposed to be getting cold here too, down in the single digits. Brrrr

I do none of those Artic preparations, in a climate where it gets to over 40 degrees C (108F) regularly. But gee, that is way too cold for me. I remember vising Hungary & Austria when it was winter. Although I could cope with the cold in Hungary, I found Austria with the windchill factor too much too bear. I spent a lot of the time in coffee shops. Pity the people who cant afford warm clothing & heating appliances in this kind of weather you are having.

My oil was changed last weekend as well. Running so nicely now too. My wife doesn't like Buster in the bed so he sleeps with me on the couch when I fall asleep there. HAHAHAHA!! No furs nor longjohns for me either. I guess I rough it as far as Minnesotans go. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Its very strange... where i am from, here in South Africa, i have never even had to think of this in the same sense! Here, its not the cold that we have to worry about but the heat! It nears 45 degrees centigrade in some places in the summer... its not cold its boiling hot! Cars are not freezing but rather overheating! Sometime i wish i was in the cold of minnesota!

Hi Grandpa Bob, I sincerely hope that you're continuing to stay warm. You've got 'us' beat at the moment, for this type of weather, although our temps. have plummeted in the past few days again. I wear my warmest coat with the hood, make sure I have my gloves, and of course boots, but mostly I don't do a lot of walking outside, when it's like this. Our townhouse is poorly insulated, so it makes it hard to get warm when it's like this. I bundle up in a blanket, and make sure I'm wearing an extra sweater, while watching t.v., and 'sometimes' even wrap the blanket around me, while on the computer.

I see I must like the phrase, "when it's like this." Oh well, next time I'll read my response over, before I post.:)

The last artic spell, my car had some problems starting but then had to run bout 10 min. b4 it would grudgingly move. I have no way of keeping it out of the wind being I have no garage or carport so I usually back my car up to the house so as to keep the front end away from the wind. I now own an insulated pair of bib overalls which I pair with a warm winter coat along with multiple layers, hat, and insulated duck boots to keep warm when I have to go outside to haul wood up or get the mail. opps...can't forget the winter work gloves that are also insulated. As for preparing my home, I'm well-stocked with firewood in the house and keep a constant blaze going. Helps cut down on the gas bill.

We keep antifreeze in our car but nothing like what you have to do. I am sure you have to keep two sets of tires one for the winter and one for the summer. My sister has mud and snow tires and regular tires they change out certain times a year. I had never head of such a thing. Oh well I am in Sunny CA and live a sheltered life I guess

i hate windchills! in cold places, the temperature is never a good enough gauge of how cold it is. the windchill factor can increase the feeling of cold by many notches. that's why there are sites that show 'feels like' temperatures after factoring in the windchill i guess. it could be an absolute of 10 degrees celcius but once the wind comes cutting in, no amount of sweaters can remove the wind from getting to our bones! i think layering is the best way of battling frost and windchill. and it's great cos you can peel off or pile on the layers indoors or outdoors as necessary and 'regulate' how hot or cold you want to feel.

when i lived in white bear lake we plugged are cars in . but i hate the cold. we had a fireplace so it was nice. most winters here in Memphis are about 40 and sunny so i love it. My boys love the cold snow and all.
