Why are the levell ratings on MyLot different from topic to topic?

Hi ~ I've been missing from MyLot for a while and just made my way back. I see that there is a new (at least for me) rating number - Levels.
I could not find the explaination for this easily and am wanting to find out how this works and just what it means. I see my Level is different from topic to topic -- how is this figured out?

Above your avatar "what are interest rankings?"
Basically it rates the amount you know, by how often you respond or start a discussion in a certain area. That data is pitched against all the over mylotters and then you find yourself placed in the ranking.
