abortion from an atheists perspective.. converting from pro-life to pro-choice.

im an atheist thats big on freedm and liberty... as long as it doesnt infringe on the liberty of others ofcourse.
the question of abortion to me used to be a question of when does life start and whether or not it is an infringment on liberty.
however, now that i think about it.. not all living things are 'equal' as they dont have the same moral principles.
so now, i have turned from pro-life, to pro-choice.
Why? for two main reasons.
first, is that life without choice is not life. the living thing must be able to make choices or else it wont be able to survive. if it cant make choices, another must make choices for it..
and second, you cant compare a fetus to a human being. its a blob (funny how some dont accept evolution).
now, im not necasserally pro-choice.. im still agnositc about it... but i say, that since we cant know when life starts, it should be the mothers decision..
a couple other things to keep in mind:
who is the government to tell us what is right and wrong?
as with other countries, woman will be going to unlicencd underground clinics and poisoning themselves and go to extreme measures to treat themselves.
and, nobody can infringe on another persons body, so are people infringing on the liberty of the mother or is the mother infringing on the liberty of the fetus?

What? You are a miracle. You get it. It is the mother's decision. And even if it were outlawed tomorrow, there will still be abortions performed. You are pro choice if you think it is the mother's choice if she has the baby, or aborts, or gives up the baby for adoption.Bravo. I am proud of you.

"since we cant know when life starts, it should be the mothers decision.."
- for me it really doesnt matter "when" life started..that may sound cold but oh well...I had other ppl to worry about at that time and they as well as myself trumped the baby...It should be the mothers decision because we know whats best for us and in many cases (though not all of course) whats best for others (such as existing children) involved....
"who is the government to tell us what is right and wrong?"
- thats a real kicker for me..Not only is it not their place to decide for me what is right or wrong and what is best for me and mine but how could they possibly know in the first place..Until one walks in the shoes of another and feels/sees/experiences exactly as that person did or does NOBODY knows better...

Well I am like you I was arguing with my fiance b/c i use to think that it was ok for abortion b/c who are we to tell someone what they can do and it would be better b/c if they dont abort it than what it winds up dumped in a dumpster out on the streets, or in a orphanage running from foster home to foster home all his/her life. Then he would say but your infringing on that kids will. So I said well when does that kid have a will when it just begans its just a form of something has the soul even been put in the body yet? What if thats whats supposed to happen to the soul to learn something and bring him closer to enlightenment. And then that soul just goes to the person that they were supposed to go to and that mom will take care of him. What about someone that has been raped, or the mothers going to die if she dont have an abortion. I got him thinking on that and he just kinda agreed but he still will say that he doesnt agree with it. which is fine, but we shouldnt make that choice for those people that want to do it. Now I do think its wrong to go into a abortion clinic everytime you get pregnet use the proper items to not get pregnet or get yourself fixed if you know you dont want kids. I have heard docters say that they have regualer costmers that always get abortions. I still sway a little iffy on the situation but i still think that its up to the person that wants it.

hi there
the discussion u have started is i must say very interesting
as i must warn u that i am just a religious bigot as u r an athiest
as far as my opinion in this matter as u say between pro life and pro choice is that life is not by the choice as nobody asked u would u like to be borned in this world before u were borned
and second to me fetious and a human being is as similer ts a born child is
thank you

There is no "you" before at least the last couple months of pregnancy. You are about as much an individual as a tumor before then--just a blob of cells with no consciousness, and no ability to feel pain or suffer. Attributing the kind of self-awareness necessary to understand a question like "would you like to be born" is just an example of the kind of fallacious appeal to emotion I talk about in my answer #2 here. .

As far as I'm concerned, unless a woman is pregnant due to rape, or she needs medical treatment that she cant have while pregnant (chemotherap) or has an ectopic pregnancy. Abortion is wrong.
Why does unborn child not deserve the right to live, but the moment the baby is born is is suddenly murder to kill it?

A sentient woman has the right to decide what happens inside her own body. Once the fetus has developed sentience and it's own body and is expelled from the woman, it is no longer under the jurisdiction of her bodily domain. There's no "suddenly" about it.

I don't really accept abortion but I see it is up to the woman if they choose to have an abortion or not. A lot of woman have an abortion because there are reasons for it like rape or maybe they are too young to support a child. I think that as soon as you find out that you are pregnant that is the beginning of life for the child that is in side of you. If you choose to end that life you are taking the child's life that he or she has away from them. You are basically committing murder, just to the lesser stent.
