Extreme Back Pain

I have been suffering from extreme back pain for the past few weeks. I can take a pain pill first thing in the morning and the pain is gone. But, first thing in the morning, it is back. I have had this pain off and on since 1991, but it has never lasted this long. A few days ago, I started having back spasms which make me yell and scare people. I have been searching all morning for an air mattress. But, they are apparently more expensive than I thought. Does anyone know of a good place to get a reasonably priced air mattress? I had not planned on buying one, but if I do not want to go insane with pain, I have to. It is so bad at this point, that I have to sit down to take my daily shower.

If I lay on the floor, that makes it so much worse. I have a big curve in the lower part of my back, so I elevate my knees to get it straight.

I feel for you, Rozie. My husband has trouble with his back and we haven't been able to afford for him to have anything done yet. He fell from scaffolding at work a few years ago, and he has so much pain now because he let it go for so long. My friend's husband got hurt at work last year and he had to have surgery. He went to the doctor today to see if he would be needing another one. Back trouble is no joke and I know you must be in real pain. My husband has an air mattress, but I don't think he uses it. I may have to ask him about that. I'm sure you could find one at Wal-Mart or maybe you could find one cheaper online. I hope you feel better!

I was talking to a friend last night and she told me that an air mattress is the worst thing for a bad back and someone else on here said the same thing. So last night I ordered a foam mattress online. I am praying that this will help. Thank you so much for responding.

That is the exact same mattress that my friend recommended, but I can not afford those right now either. So I purchased the foam mattress. It is suppose to be pretty helpful. I will see when it comes and tell everyone about it.

Thanks for telling me that. My husband and I had talked about getting one of those Tempurpedic mattresses, but they cost way our of our range. I hope we can get his problem help in the near future. You take care of yourself.

I used to wake up everyday with a backache, that is until I got my waterbed. Some people swear by them, and some people cannot sleep on them. I am one of the ones that love my bed. I am sorry to hear that your back is hurting. Here are some things I do when my back flairs up. Use heat or cold, I like heat. You can also use some muscle rub, but do not use before or after a hot shower or while using a heating pad. Also when you sleep, if you sleep on your back, put a pillow or roll up a blanket and put that under your knees. If you sleep on your side, keep your legs bent, hips and knees, also put a pillow between you knees. If it keeps hurting you might need some muscle relaxers. Good luck, I know how it can be when your back hurts.

I wish I could fall asleep on my back. I have been trying my best to in the last few weeks. I have a medium size teddy bear that I put under my knees, but I do not stay in there position for long. I do a lot of tossing and turning through the night.

I know what you are going through and feel your pain. I have not worked in ten years because of my back pain. I am taking a form of morphine and it just makes it bearable to live with. I also have five other problems that cause extrema pain, some of it is caused by Agent Orange, that I was exposed to back in 1968, in Korea. Have your Doctor check your SI joints. If these move just a little out of place it will cause extreme pain and will cause your back and legs to fail which will also give you more pain. It took more then twenty five years and many Doctors to find my problem (SI joint). I will have to live with this pain the rest of my life and sometimes I hurt so bad that I want to put an end to it all. There is nothing they can do for me except to control the pain. The medication I am taking i causing other health problems. So if you can live without the pain, do so. Some people think sleeping on the floor is good for their back but I cannot lay flat on my back so I sleep in a recliner, have done this for the last ten years and I really miss sleeping in my bed with my wife. I hope you find your problem and can get it taken care of.

As for me, I didn't have back pain. I had a severe shoulder pain. It did not happen until this Winter. I was screaming and did not know what to do, nothing that worked before worked this time any more. And it irradiated on the nerve to all over my arm, so everything I used to do before, became painful now. My doctor recommended Lyrica, it is good for muscle pain and for every severe pain. Now I barely feel it. The funny part is that I didn't believe too much some people have such severe pain until it happened to me.

The thing that frustrate me is that it goes away when I take a pain pill, but is right back the next morning. I keep blaming it on my bed, but I am not sure.

I have also been on lyrica for the last three years. The Doctor put me on this for the Peripheral Neuropathy I have. This is a side effect of Agent Orange. It has help with some of the pain and the muscle jerking. It was so bad that it would jerk me right out of my chair. No fun. The neuropathy causes all the nerve endings to flair up in pain. Even wearing cloths causes my legs to hurt. no fun. As soon as I meet my deductible on my insurance, I am going to have some wires and a unit that controls the wire in-planted into my back and anything below that point is supposed to stop hurting. I did a three day test and it did seem to help with the pain but I am not sure if it is a good Idea to use it 24/7. I am starting with a new pain mgt doctor at the end of this month so hopefully he will have some good ideas. I really do not know how much longer I can put up with this god awful pain. I think the lyrica would help most people but it is just that I have so many different parts that hurt that I do not think there is much they can do. But I will wait until I see this new doctor and see what he will have in mind. I really hope all of your pain goes away because unless you are in our shoes you really have no idea what pain is. Thank you for giving me an outlet to vent.

Hi Rozie I am sorry you are having problems with your back, you could take a hot shower, you can also pray and ask god to take the pain away. Do you all have a Walmart in Ca? my Girlfriend mention that there was one where she is, she lives in Pomano, Ca. so if there is one where she lives you should have one too? I am guessing.

There is one in Los Angeles. I am thinking about going there today. I have taken a pain pill and the pain is gone. I keep hoping it won't hurt again in the morning, but it always does. I prayed about it already and am having faith that God will heal my back once and for all. I just came back from getting some much needed exercise.

I am sorry you have back pain. I suffer from back pain also. especially when I first wake up in the morning. the best thing I have found so far is a herbal lumbar pack. I bought it at http://www.hotheadz.net I am not affiliated with that company in any way. I just wanted to tell you what helps me. I hope you find relief from your back pain soon.

I would get to a doctor or a hospital to find out what is causing your back pai. That doesn't sound to good. I will pray that it is nothing to bad. I hate having back pain myself or any kind or pain. Spasms sound even worser.

The spasms scare me because they come on suddenly and cause me to scream. When I am around my friends and it happens, it scares them, because it seems to come out of no where. It would actually be funny if it did not hurt so bad.

Have you had that back ache checked out yet Rozie? sounds like you need to if you had have back issues since 1991?!? I know its hard to get to a doctor and sorts but wouldn't it be better to find out what is wrong with it before buying a new matress? just my thought anyways! Lots of us on here have had back issues one way or another and mine ended up being a herniated disc which I got fixed through physio and NOT surgery. I also lost some of the weight I was carrying and changed my routine a bit and that helped considerably. I hope you're able to get it treated soon or at least find out what is causing you considerable pain HUGS!

Thats a good start Rozie seeing the doctor and then getting a referral to a Chiropractor. Whatever you do don't let them talk you into surgery until you get the full facts about what is causing you so much pain. Make sure x-rays and an MRI are all done too to confirm whatever it is. Try homeopath remidies, physio and such before thinking of going under the knife. Depending on how serious it is you may need to but firstly think of alternative non surgical practices first :) I did and I'm fine and dandy now :)

I have been to the doctor several times over the years. They usually give me muscle relaxers and maybe a back brace. The thing of it is, the pain has never lasted this long and it usually stops altogether. Now, it stops when I take a pain pill, but is hurting again in the morning. I am hoping to see my doctor to get a referral to a Chiropactor this time. I need to find out what is going on because it is obviously going to keep coming back and it seems to be getting worse. My friend helped me decide against an air mattress. I simply purchased a regular foam mattress. She said that air mattresses are terrible for people with back problems. Thank you for your concern and response.

Have you ever tried going to a chiropractor? That's something that's always helped me when I could afford to go...lol. I'd recommend you see a doctor to find out for sure what's causing your pain because back pain can have so many different causes it really can't be diagnosed without an x-ray or preferably an MRI. Annie.

That's the key, you really should find out what's causing the pain instead of just masking it because it IS there for a reason. There are so many different things that can cause back pain and most are easily treated. I have five discs that are messed up in my back plus severe osteo-arthritis that's both genetic and caused by my job delivering mail but I'm a lot older than you. I have a feeling the chiropractor will do you a lot of good. Anni

The pain does not usually last this long. I started looking into finding a Chiropractor today. I will have to call my insurance company for a referral tomorrow. I have an HMO. I do not remember whether or not I have ever had my back ex-rayed. But I have seen a doctor several times. All they do is give me muscle relaxers and a back brace and eventually it goes away. This time I think I need to find out what is really going on.

Back Pain Exercises - This was given to my mom by her doctor in which worked for her and now it works for me
Oh Rozie. I'm so with you with back pain! I have some exercises that work wonders for me and I'd like to pass them along to you in hopes they'll help you as well. Hubby and I made a terrible mistake a few years ago by buying another matteress set, we went from a queen to a king and the king is a pillow top which I hate with a passion because it's just too soft. I have to sleep on the queen bed sometimes because it's hard and is good on my back. We hope to get rid of the king some day when we have the funds to buy a new one and this time there will be no pillow top! LOL

Hello, Rozie! back pain is caused due to gastric problems or cold.even continuous working on computer may cause back pain.the pain killers is not the only solution.in addition you change your sleeping style.you sleep flat on the ground,do not use pillow to rest your head.do not allow your weight to increase.for ladies back pain or waist pain is very common since they do most of the household works standing the whole day and take little rest.you take adequate rest and give hot touch to the back daily in the morning.it may reduce your pain.

Have some garlic in soup and this will be an antidote if you are suffering from gas trouble. You can take some gasex too. The most important thing would be that you should NOT sleep on a dunlop or any other bouncing mattress but take special care to lie down on hard plain surface be it on the wooden plank/bench or a blanket on the floor. If your place is cold do not lie on the floor. Spread a blanket on a hard wooden cot and lie down. This is the best remedy. Check with a doctor if it has something to do with your heart.

I have back pain since 1996, from a car accident. I have been taking pain pills since then. I have tried theraphy, chiropractor and acunpuncture. Nothing really worked. I do know that worse thing you can sleep on is an air mattress. I tried that and I couldn't get up out of bed. You need a very firm mattress. Air mattresses are not good for people with back problems, take my word for it. Good luck

Actually, it is funny that you should comment on this topic today. I just completed remaking my bed, after putting on the mattress pad that I recieved today. For the most part, the back pain is gone. Every now and then I will get a sharp pain. I can not wait to see how it feels when I sleep on it tonight.

Wonder if its possible for you to buy an airmattress from a thrift shop or bargain furniture store. I am feeling sorry for you. I think what you need to do is to find out whats causing the backpain. Please don't assume. There are different treatments for various causes of back discomfort. Is it muscle spasms, ruptured disc, sciatica, osteoarthritis etc?

Have you looked into chiropractic care or massage therapy? Sometimes a sudden increase in back pain can be triggered by having over-exhurted yourself, or turning wrong, sitting wrong, long car trips, or sometimes it just happens. I have dealt with low back pain and spasms for about 20 years, and I have found that while pain pills help for the day to day pain, sometimes it just won't go away, and I know it's time to see my chiropractor or massage therapist. Fortunately for me, my husband is a massage therapist, and I'll have him work me over first, and if that doesn't improve it, I'll go see the chiropractor. You might give that a thought.
