Online friends don't move away

I've lived in the same city since I was 7 (I'm 23 now), and now I'm pretty sure I'm going to be moving to Atlanta (a couple of hours away) in a few months. I've always had a very diverse online "world" with lots of sites I frequent and online communities I'm active in, as well as some people I'd even call "friends," who I'm never met.
Something I was thinking about today was how it's necessary to have friends in real life, but one thing that's great about online friends is that, when you move or they move, your friendship doesn't really change. You still have your online communities even if you move 12 hours away, and they can be a comfort when you move to a new city and don't know anyone yet.
Has anyone had any experiences with this?

Yes, I actually have moved several times with many of the same online friends. It is nice to have those people around no matter what. I also sometimes find it easier to talk to them because you dont seem silly talking about things that are uncomfortable to you.
