I only have one cat in the house, but my mom has 10 cats. She has a house with a full basement, and because not all of the cats get along, some live in the basement which is finished, and they even have their own bedroom, with a couch, a big round wicker char with a giant fluffly pillow in it, and a twin bed. As for them trying to get your food, what I would recommend is that they start learning that meal time for you is not meal time for them. Maybe putting them in a bedroom or on a porch or something when you are eating will help. Or try feeding them just before you sit down to eat. I have found that a cat with a full belly generally prefers to go curl up and nap and won't be such a pest.
That's about the only suggestions I can come up with, short of getting some plate covers and never leaving your plate unattended without a cover over it.

Yup, I'd have broke out the super soaker on that one. Seriously though, I'm glad I only have the one in the house. We had two other house cats, but I had to put Bootsy down last January, she was 19 and having all kinds of problems getting to the litter box and was in pain from arthritis. And Willie was 17 and had gone nearly blind and was having problems getting around and was hurting himself trying. Willie would take over an abandoned plate if left unattended, but we learned to post a guard at meal time if we had to leave our plate. I wish you the best of luck, I am curious how you ended up with so many cats, I know my mom's are all rescues that she is rehabbing and tries to find new homes for after she has them fixed and social.

Well, having ten cats is a lot of cats, maybe you may want to put some up for adoption. If you do decide to keep all of them you may want to start putting your food in the oven or refrigerator,or try putting a heavy top over your food and never leave your food on the table while you go into another room thinking the cats won't eat it because they will. Always keep an eye out for your food, and make sure the cats aren't hungry. And try teaching them to stop eating your food.

10 cats mean never leaving your food unattended. Unless I have put my plate down in a room where my cats (23) can't get into I pick up my plate to go with me. Or, if the roomie & I are eating together - seldom - one of us stay to guard the plates.
A certain amount of "thumps" as kittens have taught them that certain things are not acceptable & they have learned "no" that way. A "thump" is a flick on the forehead or nose with a finger. Not hard enough to really hurt or damage them, but gets a their attention & is a deterrent.

Well, ten cats is a lot in the first place, you may want to try to put some up for adoption. And if you decide to keep them you may want to put your food in the oven or refrigerater,or cover with a heavy top until you're ready to eat it,and since you have so many cats you have to watch your food, don't just leave your food on the table while you go into another room thinking the cats won't eat it because they will. Also make sure their not hungry.

10 cats :) - I really envy you for that. I would have lived with as many cats as possible, if I was living all alone.
Anyways, looks like cats love you since they are staying where you are. And you probably have deserved their attention :) by showing very friendly behaviour to them and allowing them to do anything - that's not so bad by the way, exactly the opposite! Looks like you are a good pet keeper, so all you and the cats you take care of are doing is just having a good company and enjoying your frienship! LOL :)

We have 11 cats. We live out in the country. Most of the cats are outside cats and don't all live in the house. 3 are housecats, the rest mostly stay outside or are in and out. I couldn't imagine living with ALL of them in the house.
I regularly vaccuum and clean to stay ahead of the cat hair. They aren't allowed on the counters or on the kitchen table. I have a spray bottle of water they get sprayed with if they do something that's not acceptable. Doesn't hurt them and they hate it! Works quite well!
