Have you ever wondered why we have a moon? Just what is the importance of having a moon? Does it really make any difference if we have a moon or not? We know obviously that without the sun we wouldn't just NOT have light, but everything on this planet would cease to exist and one day when the sun explodes or implodes this Earth will cease to exist But what would happen if our moon blew up or disintigrated, would it affect us, how would it affect us?I know there would be no moon for me to howl at, but surely there must be more significance in our Moon, a satellite, we can't live on it, it gives minimal light if we are out at night and it's just a big ball of cheese! So would you miss it if there was no moon?Do you know why we have the moon, why is it there or that too profound And what would happen to our good Earth if the moon disappeared?

I think there's more chance of the Earth disintigrating than the moon, what with global warming and a threatened asteroid in 2012! But that as they say is another story!

Hello wolfie34,Thanks for the interesting discussion. Some where I read a line like "Life on earth is the result of tidal forces of the moon." Now to establish this point right now I can remember two examples, like people suffer from Rheumatism,Arthiritis etc experience an increase of their pain during full moon and moonless nights and secondly moon orbits the earth once in 28 days might be the reason women experience their regular monthly menstruation every 28days. Thanks.

I can't say for certain what would happen if we didn't have a moon, Wolfie, but I do know that it would screw up our oceans significantly. The pull of the moon is responsible for the tides in our oceans and with them, who knows what might happen? I think it also affects us as well. I know that there are behavioral aspects in humans that are often blamed on the affects of the moon. Without the moon in the sky, would man have experienced such an intense desire to reach the stars? It was a closer target and in many ways, I think, a big part of our success in getting into space. And, Wolfie dear, what would a Wolf be without a moon to howl at? Where would our fiction be without stories of werewolves needing the moon to change their form? What would a romantic night be without a moon to light the night when you're snuggled up with that special someone? I think we need the moon for more than just the tides.

There are importances to having the moon. One is what are called low and high tides. These are caused by the moon. Another is gravity. Should the moon ever pull out of its orbit around the earth it could very well cause major destruction to this world and cause the loss of gravity. The moon is a great navigational tool for hikers and campers as well. When the moon is full, it provides incredible light for those who need it while vacationing in the wilderness. The moon is full of superstition and wonders. It could very well provide a means of living for humans when the world gets overpopulated. I am strong advocate of our space program because the need for other worldly bodies may come into play since we are slowly destroying our world. I wonder if you remember the miniseries called Space:1999? This was a story about the moon being ripped out of its orbit with a lunar base on it. It traveled throughout space coming across other species. It was pretty good. This is not my best response by any means, but it is a fun topic. Thanks for providing it.

I want to tell you two things about the moon. The first is that it was and still is very important to me. Some years ago there was an eclipse of the moon and I was back at my mother's in UK. We watched it together and I pointed out to her that it is the same moon that I watch from my home here in Italy. That seemed to shorten the distance between us for her. The second is something my father once said which I will never forget. Here in Italy it is common for people to take notice of the moon before doing many things. When they are sowing the seeds for example. Things that grow down into the soil like carrots and potatoes are sown when the moon is declining from a full moon to no moon and things like beans and peas which grow above the soil are planted when the moon is rising. If you have your hair cut and are not wanting it to grow too quickly before your next cut then they say here that you should go to the hairdresser when the moon is falling too. I asked my father if he watched the moon when sowing beans and he replied "No, I watch the ground where I'm sowing them!" lol.

I think that the moon controls the tides of the oceans. It probably does other important stuff too but I don't know what. Why do you hate the moon?

I don't hate the moon, far from it, I was just wondering what would happen if we didn't have the moon. Thanks for your response.

Wolfie, I think I was sleeping the day we did the moon in school. All I can remember is that it has influence on the tides of the oceans, and that gravity holds the earth on its orbit. But other posters have told you that all ready. Like you I am a night person so I adore the light of the moon. Nighttime is when I like to walk, or sit on a beach, lake or on the mountain top near us and look out over the city where I live and watch the moon and stars.

to answer your question, yes i have wondered about: why, what-if,and yes i would miss it if it were to go away! i know that (in my own heart) the moon affects me and the way i feel, just like the weather, i was born under the sign libra and i am a very feeling person, who like to help people and make them happy and try and keep some sort of balance in life (i try w/not alot of luck) in these crazy times we live in and things i see to come . also i do not know what would happen to earth if the moon was no more?? i would like to think that we could always have the moon there to howl at or just to look at ;-)

From what I understand, wolfie, the moon has a great effect upon the ocean tides and even upon us physically. The waxing and waning of the moon can affect our weather, and it is even thought to affect our moods. It is also a popular theory that we once had more than one moon. The strange behavior of some people during a full moon is one instance of how it affects people. The statistics bear out the fact that more violent crimes occur during this period. I would not want to know what would happen if the moon was suddenly gone from us.

Haha I think the moon, besides being a satellite to the earth, also plays a vital role in gravitational pull and the high tides and low tides and all those. I don't really know what'll exactly happen when the moon disappears but I know that night would be enveloped in total darkness and that night would lose its beauty. The Lunar Calendar will also cease to exist and no more romantic walks under the moonlight. But I think the moon plays a more vital role though. haha!

Hello dear wolfie. This is a very interesting discussion to be raised by you. I have to say that my dear wolfie is very imaginative to think of this discussion. Well, I think that the moon is as important as the sun, either of which is a must for us. As you know, the sun offers us warmth and daylight to make all the creatures on the earth live on. And the moonlight reflected by the sun makes us able to see our way clearly at night. Without the moon, nights would be completely dark for us to walk in the wild. Also eveything has its positive and negative sides. like the sun to the moon, men to women, boys to girls. Therefore the importance of the moon cannot be ignored or neglected. I hope that I have made some meaningful points in the response for wolfie. hehehe. Thanks for reading.

I am not real sure why we have the moon but I love it when it is full,I think it has something to do with the tides and such. I would really miss it if it wasn't there. If the moon disappeared the world would be in disaray so less hope that dosen't happen. You have a great topic to discuss. Have a great day!
