Do you pick up hitch hikers or help people on the side of the road?

When you see someone on the side of the road with their hood up, do you stop and ask if they need help? If you see a broken down car and then, a mile down the road someone walking with a gas can or something of the sort, do you stop and offer them a ride? Let's assume it's super cold out AND raining? I realize the danger of picking up hitchhikers but I've always been one to stop, and never had a problem...I just can't help it...sometimes a persons walk will take them over an hour, but giving them a ride can only make it ten minutes or sometimes less. If it's in the middle of town I don't bother because some people prefer to walk for several reasons, but if it's out in the middle of nowhere, or I know they are walking ONLY for lack of other means of transportation I almost always offer a ride, unless my kids are with me. I very rarely pass someone with a busted car without offering a jump, and if I see someone with a car that has broken down in the middle of the road and they're trying to push it out of the road I always help em push it. What about you? I wonder if willingness to help out with this sort of thing is related to where you are located...like a rural area or a city?

Its a good discussion. I would stop if there had been a crash,or its a family walking and I was with my partner. My family has had bad experiences with hitchhikers and people on the side of the road, they steal from your car they mug you..not everyone but there are people who also set that up.Stopped the car once to help what looked like 2 people on the side of the road with there bonnet up as soon as we stopped atleast 10 people came out from the bush heading towards the car,I suggest when helping someone stay in your car until you know what they need help with.

Fortunately I live in a rural community. Also, our license plates have stickers that designate the county they are from. While I won't pick up hitch hikers, if I see a vehicle broken down with my county sticker, I will stop and ask if they need help. I have done this numerous times. Once, I was on my way to college classes (I started college at 32) and there was an old man with a cane out on the highway trying to flag people down and it was about 40 degrees out. I watched as two other cars coming the other direction but on his side of the road just drove on by. I went to the next mile road and turned around. I pulled up to him and asked if he needed help. He said he had realized he forgot to turn off his stove at the house and was on his way to the dump with a load of trash, and tried to turn around on the gravel road, and dropped his back wheels off in the ditch. He asked if I could take him to his son's place so he could have his son come back and pull him out. I was driving a 3/4 ton 4X4 truck and I keep tow ropes in the back and I said I'd just pull him out if that was ok. He thought that was great. I drove him on up the 3/4 of a mile he had walked back to the higway to his truck and I pulled him out. He asked my name and which town I was from, and I told him. Not long after, I received a beautiful thank you note from him with a $50 bill in it. It had no return address, just a signature inside that said "Thank you for pulling an old man out of a jam, Bill". While I didn't expect anything from the man, it was nice to know that he appreciated the kindness I showed him. But, it's easy to do in this part of the country. If it was the big city, I doubt I'd be so ready to help.

awesome, that's so great! I agree when it comes to the city...it's hard because there's so much traffic, especially on the freeway, but I usually try if I'm not in an incredible hurry. That's really awesome that you helped him, and awesome that he looked up your address and sent you a reward. :)

I'm always a sucker when it comes to helping people out, that could be me on the side of the road. If you don't help other people out when they need it most, you shouldn't be upset when no one is there to help you.

I agree completely...I don't expect help from others, but I always put myself in their place.

I don't pick up hitchhikers at all. By that I specifically mean someone on or near the highway carrying a bag/suitcase and obviously not broken down on the side of the road. I've never felt secure enough to do that. I am more than willing to stop, especially in town, when I see someone broken down. Even if there's nothing I can do to help, I can atleast offer them a phone. I have stopped to offer help to people on the interstate/highway, but not as often as I probably could have. I will offer a ride to the next exit and back when I see someone walking a distance from their car toward an exit. My husband is better at it than I am. He always stops to help. With me it depends on where I am, the weather and who I have in the car with me. I do offer rides to locals when I know they have no other way to get around.

No I don't pick up hitch hickers but I have giving a sandwich to someone on the side of the road once. And spare change to a women and her child. I like to help people but in my area you never know who is really homeless of needs help and who is just acting.
