I've been shopping for a new PC for working from home, but I'm undecided about whether or not to buy a Windows XP from one of the sites that still sell them, or to go ahead and get one with Vista Premium. A couple of the companies I have worked for systems weren't compatable with Vista yet, and a couple of companies that I'm trying to get contracts with use it and some don't? I've always been one that likes to stay up to date on the lates 'puter technology, but because of these problems and others that I hear about, I have put off going to Vista? What do you think, and what are your experiences with going Vista so far?

Depends on your experience with Vista...Sure, a lot of applications aren't compatible with Vista right now, and it may seem to be a better choice to get XP instead. But you need to futureproof your PC, meaning get the PC with Vista. If you don't like it, you can still have the choice of purchasing XP, rather than the other way around.

Thanks so much for your response...do you mean buy a Vista PC, and put XP on it if I don't like it? Someone suggested that to me, but wasn't sure about it. I really wonder how long it will be for all of the companies that contract work from home jobs(that I know of) decide to make the switch to Vista? Or maybe they're waiting until more people get Vista?

Thanks again for your added input..I really do want to get one for the newer specs on the Vista PC's. I know just what you mean..I remember having WindowsME and it was sooo slow, upgraded to XP the first chance I had! Hopefully some of the work-from-home companies will switch or make their software compatible with Vista..so far it's not.

Yes, buy a Vista PC...and if you don't like it, you can uninstall it and reinstall Windows XP..
Well, many people are not moving to Vista yet because of compatibility and bugs issues....However, the first service patch is scheduled to be out around mid 2008...so it might make Vista better...
However, the switch will be eventual, seeing Microsoft is pushing Vista and that they will not be giving support to XP...
I obviously prefer XP, but I also need to think about the future....Its just like when you have Windows 98SE which was one of the best OS then, and you don't want to move on to a newer OS....And Windows 98SE cannot support the newer applications and games :\

I will recommend you to go for Windows XP Professional service pack 2.I have been using it for 2 years and it works great.Windows vista is also good but there are certain limitations of windows vista.Windows vista is costlier than XP and there are certain problems in it.It makes computer slow and uses lot of computer memory. Moreover various programs and softwares are not fully compatible with it.Benefits of windows vista are that awesome graphics and superior video and audio output along with 3d effect which is really cool. Rest everything is dependent on you.

I currently use XP Pro w/sp2..and it does work pretty great, I agree. Do you know anything about an upgrade to sp3..mentioned above? Also read that Vista uses a lot of memory, and that you need at least 2GB or ram..which is why I don't understand when I check out a lot of Vista pc's, quite a few only came with 1GB, even saw a couple with 512! Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it!

I used the xp pro for about 3 yrs, then when I bought my new puter in june of 07 it had vista installed when I got it.I did really like the xp pro but now that I've learned to use the vista I like it even better. As many problems as I've heard people say they have had with vista...so far I have encountered none.

Hi
I have not actually used it myself but i've heard from alot of people that i was working with that Vista is not great lots of problems with it crashing etc.
I would buy with XP which is what i have on my laptop and i think it's really great.
It might be worth asking about windows in case they are bringing something new out soon. It's always being updated to worth looking into.
Good Luck

For me now you better choose Windows XP because many software, games or hardware did not support Windows Vista yet. I think you better buy Windows XP or if you want to buy windows Vista, i suggest you to wait until more software, games are support Windows Vista and at that time you can buy Windows Vista.

Honestly, it depends on what you are looking for in a computer system, and it also depends on how fast the computer system you are looking for is going to be.
You see, Microsoft Windows Vista is more pleasing and appealing to the eyes, however it does need a beefer system. It also opens up numerous other experiences and "hidden eggs" which anyone can enjoy. It can get somewhat confusing.
Now with Windows XP, comes easier, yet less sleek, computer platform to understand. It will also be easier on the pockets- for the cost of maintaining is cheaper, as well as the computer system itself would be cheaper.
Now that Windows Vista has released, there are less security threats with XP. Hackers are now concentrating on the newest and latest thing. Why not switch to a MAC?

Thanks for your response...I've seen some good prices, except they don't seem to have enought memory, which I guess I could add myself. I've also found a couple of places that have good prices for "new" XP systems, but they sell out pretty fast. I really would love to get a MAC, but one of the companies that I want to contract with use MAC or are compatible. Do plan on getting one eventually and just have both. Thanks again!

i might say go for Vista, because sometime from now everyone will shift to Vista or the newer versions. With Quad cores in the market, Vista is the best choice

There're some softwares that can't run in Vista, and there're still some bugs not solved in Vista. So,in my opinion, Windows XP is more useful in everyday life...

What do you mean by formatting each month? Making more programs compatible?

Vista is still new today there are some devices and softwares in which are not vista compatible yet, I suggest you gave a little Time before you use it. My vote is the XP, most of the devices and software are compatible to it. And if you want to make your XP looks like Vista you can try a third party program visual styler at crystalxp.net (totally free to download).

I used windows XP home edition for the past few years. This was actually the first OS I started using (yep, I got into the Internet world later in life LOL). Last year my husband and I bought a couple of new computers, that have Vista preinstalled. We've had no problem thus far with it, other than our printer not being compatible. But we just bought a new one the other day, so we are good to go! :P

If people will think back, each time they have come out with the latest and greatest operating system, there have been bugs. It took a few years to get the basic bugs worked out, then the operating system was great. Take XP, for example, when it first came out, there were all kinds of compatibility issues. Now, it is the one most are familiar with. I came into the whole computer thing late, going from windows 3.1 to 95 to 98 to XP in a period of about 2 years. (I got the first one in 1999). I had to learn the new technology rather quickly, as I was starting college and it was going to be necessary for me to use a computer. Prior to that, my only experience with computers had been in high school, back when we used the old TRS-80 and could make our name flash across the screen. (Dating myself a little bit I suppose) Anyway, I learned the ins and outs of those operating systems, and I love XP. I have since taken Information systems in college, and I have decided that until Vista has been on the market for 4-5 years, and they've had a chance to get the major compatibility issues worked out, and all the bugs, I'll stick with XP.
I'm going to make an assumption that the work you do for other companies requires you to use Word and Excell or something along those lines. That said, I believe that no matter what system the company is using, your work will transfer to their systems fine if done through a network or by disc or e-mail. That said, I think you might be better off waiting a year or two more to switch to Vista. Just remember the Vista platform is not compatible with alot of hardware and software. If you do decide to go with Vista, hang on to your current XP computer because if Vista does crash, you'll at least have a backup.

There are many software packages and peripherals that will not yet work with Vista. If you have computer peripherals like a printer, a scanner, etc. check to see that there are Vista drivers for them. This problem is becoming so common that Win XP is selling as an option with many computers.
