Social Security Number

I'm a new comer here in USA. I tried to get a social security number but not was given, because of the so many step by step process they want me to do. I've asked my friends here in California and in some other states how they get their social security number. They told me they just presented passport with the k1 visa,attached I-94,and marraige contract. So,i have followed what they did.
Last friday i went to the Social Security Office,filled out an application form and presented to them my passport,k1 visa,attached I-94,and marriage contract. The agent told me that they could not give me a number if i dont have an EAD or Employment Authorization,greencard,or k3 visa.
I felt depressed after knowing it. I never even want to work but just to spend time with my fiance for a few years. I dont know why they would require me to have an EAD. Is it necessary to have an EAD before i can get an SSN?

jtmblossom, you tried to get a social security number, what is the reason for applying for this mumber?

Im already married to my filipino-american husband here in US. So,i guess part of the K1 Fiance Visa is to get a security number. There was this question on the adjustment of status application as well as Employment Authorization about the Social Security Number.But,i leave all those questions blank because i dont have one.
Last year,my friend from Arizona got social security number after they got married there. That is why they wonder why i wasn't able to get one.Just this month,they forward their change of status to Chicago with her security number and employment authorization,plus her State Identification Card.
Since i dont have social security number,i wasnt able to get State ID,bacuase we decided to wait until we will be granted a greencard and employment authorization.
Its confusing whether to get one or not.When i applied SSN,they asked me if i have an Employment Authorization,or a greencard,or a k3visa which i dont have one.So,how come my other friends were given an SSN when in fact they only showed their passport,with I-94,and marriage license.Its is really confusing!

jtmblossom, based on my experienced before, when my hubby and I went to Social Security Office to apply my SS number, We didn't get marriage yet. They're just ask only my passport and I-94 then issued my SSN. Then after 2 weeks i received my SSN.
After we got marriage we went there again to change my last name into marriage name. Again there is no problems occured.
I was just wondering why they didn't grant yours in fact your marriage already to your fiancée. Maybe you can try the other Offices or just visit the visajourney.com maybe they have a new policy on how to get SS number. Hope it will helps you..Good luck!
