I was just looking out my kitchen window looking at my birds trying to drink from my birdbath that is frozen. Now the squirrels are smart they are digging at it and eating pieces of ice.LOL I think I should go out and pour some hot water in their bird bath. Dont you?Do you feed the birds where you live?

Yaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy! Your back! I am so happy to see you back here!
Poor birds! I would go and put some hot water in to melt the ice so the birdies can get a drink. Here in Canada we don't see many birds in winter because I think it gets a little too cold for them! When I lived at home with my parents they always had a bird feeder, and a bird bath in summer! The birds would always drop by for a quick drink and some grub.

heheh aww poor birdies. maybe you shoudl go water them ;)
I dont feed the birds where i live, but the people on the top floor feed the squirrels which i think is annoying. cause in the summer time they rip up and eat the garbages. Someone near my friends house where i am at must feed the birds around here tough, because i always hear birds all year round! I'd think if people didn't feed them they would fly south wouldnt they ? cause its REALLY cold here!!

I hope you did go out and pour some hot water on it lol the poor things must be thirsty and I think the Squirrels are being selfish there they could break it up for the Birds to you know I have no garden so no there is nowhere to leave anything for them but I know my Neighbour does as she has a small Garden

Might be a good idea to feed and water those birdies. No, I have never had a bird bath or feeder. No place to hang it outside. The tree branches are up too high for me to reach.
My mother use to always feed the birds. It was her favorite thing to do since she was an avid bird lover.

I have the same problem, carolbee. What I did was take my umbrella clothesline and hung feeders from each corner. It's low enough for me to be able to fill them but yet high enough so the squirrels can't raid em. Either that or if you have a long clothesline going from tree to tree, you can hang the feeders from that as well. I gotta get creative around here or the only wild animals that get to eat are the squirrels and raccoons.
Um, since when is 'c*ons a bad word?

I am called the bird lady in these parts. I am not me without a trunk full of birdseed and a bag of unsalted peanuts. I work in the downtown core and feed the pidgeons and sparrows and crows mostly. I have been known to feed raccoons and mice too and any other wildlife who needs me. I just love birds and they are so smart. I have crows that can spot me at the bank and land at my feet waiting for a peanut or 12 from my pocket. So I'd have to say yes, go and thaw the birdbath! Enjoy your birds...

Good for you. Too many people feed the birds bread. They burn up way too many calories trying to digest the bread. Unsalted peanuts are many a latge birds favorite food. I use black sunflower seeds. All birds love them especially the smaller birds but I get the unshelled variety for the smaller birds. I have to get a few feeders as the seeds get buried in the snow.

Hi Terry Sugarpot, haha!
I just read that you poored hot water in the birdbath, good for you sweet lady!
Doesn't it drive you crazy sometimes wondering what all the little animals are doing when it's down in the teens at night and the wind is blowing every which way, like, are the skunks, squirrels, birds all hiding somewhere?.....oooohhhh, it's just so cold for them.
Yes, I feed the birds and animals through the winter but now I feel I should do it more. Like I mentioned before, I'm in the basement and kind of forget what it's like to look out the window as a reminder. I wanna MOVE!!!!

OK!!..I'm already packing!, haha. As long as it's not a basement with Glass Block Windows!...talk about depressing.
I'll move by you and then we can feed the animals together, that would be so much fun!...oh boy, then we can have hot chocolate and cheese curls together, and I'll taste your Christmas Cookies and Spaghetti, mmmmmm.
Ok, now I'm not kidding, I AM packing, hahahahahaha!

What a picture that must be, seeing the squirrels digging out the ice and eating it! Make theirs a 99 I think, do you provide ice cream cones for them! They are so smart and they are crafty at getting at the bird nuts too! We always leave bread and food leftovers for the birds! We even throw out the chicken carcass for Freddy Fox! So none of our animals in our garden go hungry, there is something for everyone. We have have a family of wood pigeons tucking in to their feast. The only birds we don't like are magpies and they get chased off for they are greedy and bully the poor sparrows. I love our robin, who reminds me of my nan as she loved robins when she was alive. I do a lot of digging in the garden too, even in winter and the robins love me because I dig up lots of fresh worms for them and they even swoop down beside me and collect their takeaways!

We feed the birds and love to watch them come to the feeders. We gave up on keeping water nearby because it was constantly freezing. There is a brook in the woods near us so I am certain that they do not go thirsty.

They sell heaters for birdbaths at Home Depot etc that are fairly cheap. I am looking into a few feeders and or birdbaths as the birds love my flowers and apple blossoms during the summer and I want them around during this cold season as well.

Yes I feed the birds and squirrels. I also have a bird bath and really enjoy watching them eat, drink and bathe. Where I live it does not freeze very often and if it does it thaws out when the sun comes up so I dont have to add hot water.

I think all of God's little creatures need all the help they can get during the cold winter months! So yes - go and thaw out the birdbath for the birds Terry!
However, the smart little squirrels have probably broken the ice already!
I love feeding the birds and often go down to our local duck pond with half a loaf of bread for them all.

I do have a bird feeder out but the squirrels go at it too LOL Some years ago we decided we would prefer to do our camping in only one place each summer for a while so we got a trailer and used to spend most weekends there. Because there were so many beautiful birds we got bird feeders and a bird bath and we loved to see them specially in the morning when we were having our breakfast. SOme brave birds used to even come close to us to "steal " our crumbs LOL

Hello dear TerryZ. It would be nice if the frozen water is melted by your pouring some hot water for the poor birds to eat. Well, I also have some birds outside my kitchen window. Every morning the little birds start to sing in the small hole in the wall for my airconditioner line to be connected. They are using the hole as their nest and wake me up in the morning by their singing, "Good morning, Williamjisir, time to wake up and get up". I love those birds, which we call sparrows. By the way, I don't feed them as they can always find their food down there on the bank of the small river, where my apartment is located.

Oh that's sad. Maybe you could pour some hot water over it and at least they would be able to get to the water before it freezes up again. It seems like the squirrels have the right idea. LOL I don't feed the birds. I used to but I haven't done it since my son was born.

Yes, I love to feed the bird and watch them from my back window. I am just like you, I would be standing there wondering if hot water would help them out. Knowing me, I would try it. We don't have that much trouble around here with things freezing over.
So, what did you end up doing?

Yes...but not in a feeder. I toss out all my old bread and cereal for either them or the bunnies. I get lots of bunnies in my yard. It's fun to just watch then dig up stuff too...I can see by the tracks the little bunnies stop where there is food...then turn around and hop out of the yard.

Well, we don't have a bird feeder, but I do throw out bread crumbs for the birds and if they get it before the neighborhood dogs do, then I guess that would be feeding them especially when I get a good aim and get some stuck in the tree...

Hi,i feed them all year long.I love birds with a passion!I even make them peanutbutter treats, popcorn and apples to eat, haha! The squirrel here,i rarely see it anymore since i began war with it a while ago.I feel sad now:(I saw it today and felt bad for trying to scare it off.I do have a flying squirrel that comes every night to eat at a station we built beside our door under the carport away from owls and such.It eats nuts, apples and sunflower seeds, its sooo cute!and is becoming tame,i stand outside beside it while it eats and it doesnt move, even coming to see me,haha.
