What does having a girlfriend/boyfriend mean to you if you're still in school?

For my part, i'm still in college and i told myself not to have a girlfriend until i can earn on my own. My perspective about relationships is that the girl that i would want to be my girlfriend will be my wife in the end. I think of the long-run but people these days don't think like that. I've known people that had a lot of ex's and kids having a relationship even in grade school or high school. What's your thought on this?
