We put our dogs on a lead in the yard that reaches up to the back door. They don't stay out too long in this cold weather! Well, one doesn't seem to mind too much because she has such a dense coat (she is part Chow) but the other two are barking to come back in right away!

I have two wolfdogs ( see my profile pics ). They have a 1/8 acre pen out back & I let them in when I get home in the afternoons. They have their own doggie door so I don't have to walk them ( for that reason anyway ). These guys were built for cold weather so it doesn't bother them.

I don't have to walk my dog, he walks me, we live in a fist floor apartment and it is not so cold here in India, anytime the door is open, he runs downstairs and we have to drag him back home. The nights are cold now and he sleeps on the bed with a blanket and a pillow. A pampered brat, he's a beautiful Lab, 2 1/2years old.

Where I live, in the Northeast, there is usually a warning on the weather report that people should keep their pets inside. Like people, animals will adjust to the weather a certain amount depending on where they live. Here in Quebec I feel it is cold if it goes below about 10F. It's not uncommon for it to go below zero F, sometimes down to minus 40 a few times a year. On those days, people don't go out much, and pets generally go out only to do what they must and then come back in. By comparison, my family in Connecticut complains of bitter cold anywhere below POSITIVE 40F. It's all in what you are used to.

I have to agree, below 10F it is not safe for animals to be outside, small animals suffer the most.
We have really cold winers here in Chicago, right now is about 9F, but this morning was about -5F....
Warmer weather next week I hope....

I usually just open the door for my dogs. There aren't usually many cars in my neighborhood so I do not have to worry about them getting run over. They also know the way around the neighborhood.

as long as you think that your dogs are safe...
My dogs have fenced yard, I wouldn't let them run on my street....

Despite the cold.. I admire the way you walk with the dogs.( all with collar).
Here..many walks with their animals but not always use collar.
I walked with my poodle but..here is not so much sacrifice.. we are in the summer.

We walk Diesel twice a day for at least an hour at a time as Diesel is a 15 month old labrador full of energy and this breed of dog need plenty of exercise as they can be destructive if bored. We only use a lead whilst walking on pavements and we usually take him to wooded areas and let him run free. He loves his walks and they keep him fit.

Terry, aren't you afraid to let cats out? My cat is indoor only, she is tiny and I am afraid to let her out.
Justrachel, Diesel is lucky dog for sure. I saw Diesel picture on your profile...:)

I have an 8 year old yellow lab and a 6 month old fox fur lab and I own a townhome, so I have no choice. I walk Xena(8 yr old) three times a day and Ginger 4 to 5 times a day and I have to pick up their poop each time. I have trained both of them to go faster when it's really cold out so their paws don't freeze.
It's not much fun putting on the boots, heavy coat, hat and gloves eight times a day, but at least I get some exercise out of it too.

this is why I feel better not having dogs since I will have to walk them out and in winter I am just not the happiest person outside. I do think having a puppy will give my cat something else to bully (kidding) but then again this puppy will suffer in winter because I'm not going to walk it out, so I never get a dog or puppy.
My cat can't care less what happen outside she is indoor and has enough to climb, push, rub, sleep on, scratch.. what a happy cat

Small dogs are OK running outside if you have fenced yard.
My dogs are running on my yard for last few days...

It depends on how cold it is. I was out walking the dog for almost two hours today in -10 degrees celsius and sunshine since it was such a beautiful day with all the snow and he enjoyed it as much as I did but I don't think I'd be going out that long if it were like -20 degrees. I do walk him in whatever weather there is though, but sometimes the walks are much shorter than usual.

I guess you get used to in Finland. We have very hot summer, warm spring and fall, so winter is a big deal for us. And wind makes it much colder. It is not only about temperature, but wind and humidity...making it as -29C....
I wouldn't mind -10 and sunshine...

Hi Pola, good question....I walk mine three times a day unless I am really sick. I'm retired though so I have the time. I don't like the cold weather and I live in Pennsylvania so I bundle up real warm when its cold.

I actually seldom walk my Buster as we have a huge fenced in backyard. He gets plenty of exercise running around there. It's been very very frigid here so Buster runs out, does his duty, then wants in almost immediatly. He will go right outside by the back steps not even venturing to the yard it's so cold. HAHAHAHA!
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I like to go for a walk with my dog even when it's cold, but when it's too cold even he doesn't want to stay out long :) Still I have to take him out. I could let him out in the backyard and clean later, but my inlawa are the ones who live downstairs and to go to the backyard we would have to pass trough their house. If it's nubby they don't say anything, but if it was me the comments wouldn't stop, so I still go out with Tazz normally when it's very cold, we just stay out for less time :)
