I read a post saying they pay $1-3 per article for the next 90 days but they never elaborated. I've heard good and bad things about Helium. I too am on the fence whether its worth writing for. Some say unless you write a ton of articles you won't make any money.

That promotion requires the writer to have attained a high level of rating stars--for reading and rating other people's work, not just for the articles they write. To make money on Helium you need to write a lot of articles and promote them, too.
I'm happy with my Helium earnings for the among of effort I put it, but if people are writing JUST for the money they pay, probably they are in the wrong place.

I’ve encountered someone from the Internet who uses to write for this site. I haven’t visited this website as far as I can remember but I’ll do it now that you remind of it. hehehe.. I love writing especially when I have nothing else to do, it’s what usually go for.

I am but it takes a lot of writing, patience and promoting. I got 2 of the 3 mastered but the promoting is something I'm not very good at. I'm not real sure how to actually go about it. I do put a link on my site for writing portfolio reasons and maybe it'll draw interest as well. I'm trying all types of items like the StumbleUpon for example. I'm gonna have to figure that part out and see if I make payout but I'm not sure how articles to suggest writing.

I write a lot for Helium. I usually enjoy it (I have been there a lot with their Reward-athon and am a little sick of it now). It takes time and a lot of articles to make money (more then pennies). But you can make money there. I love it as a passive income. I make money there when I am doing other stuff because my articles get viewed while I am gone. You get paid according to page views. It is only a penny here and a penny there, but over time they do add up.
Right now if you get three rating stars and one or more writing star, you can make 1-3 dollars an article, upfront.

I don't know, once you get a good bit of popular articles on Helium, you can make some residual income and I use my articles as samples for other writing jobs. So I guess there is some benefits, if you are willing to put a little into it.

To me Helium requires a lot of hard work for very little return. Call me cynical but I think there are many sites cashing in on bloggers' needs to promote their blogs. There have to be easier ways to make money and to promote your site.

I do write for helium from time to time, so far, I have made $17 something dollar but since their payout is $25, I haven't been paid yet! I would say it requires a lot of work to reach the payout amount but if you enjoy writing and don't mind that it takes awhile before you get your payment, it's a definite fun site.
