Many people are getting obese. 1 out of 3 Americans are now classified as OBESE. Many children are becoming fat, overweight and obese. Are we eating too much? Is three times a day meal making us more fat and unhealthy? Or is the portion of are food simply too big for our digestive system?

I WISH I could eat too much! I'm under weight and it sucks. I try to eat anything and everything I can get my hands on, but it never seems to be enough.
Of course, I don't buy really all that crappy of food either. My choices are all basically healthy, as I have children and want them to have a balanced diet.
I don't like candy, desserts, fried food, junk food, pasteries, or pretty much anything that would help me gain a pound or two... lmao
I eat rice, chicken, pork, beef, venisin (sorry if I spelled that wrong), fruits & veggies - man I love my veggies! Pizza, pasta... I eat a lot.
I just don't really go for the fast food chains. I cook almost all my meals at home, and seldom from a box. Maybe it's the preservatives & addatives that are placed in those foods that contribute to weight gain....

I wish I could be like you , eat and not gained weight. Maybe you should have a doctor check your metabolism, otherwise you can just enjoy food to your heart's delight, I wish I could but now as I aged I get fat easily and have hard time shedding those excessive weight.

A lot of people say they wish they had my problem, but really you don't. Your body starts to really hurt when you get too thin. I'm trying so hard to get back up to a healthy weight & it's frustrating that I just can't seem to.
I'm 31 years old and I've given birth to 5 children! (I have 7 right now because 2 came with the man =P) But my motabalism should have slowed down already and it just seems to have cranked up even higher. It's frustrating. I'm 5'4" and 102 lbs. I should be up around 115 or 120.
I was down to 95 lbs last year, but like I said, I've been trying really hard to gain. I want to get up to 110 by summer.

I think people are not necessarily eating too much, but just the wrong foods. There are too many unhealthy, convinient food choices [like snack cupcakes, fried chicken, and hamburgers] available to people.

Yes, there are alot of unhealthy foods that are around. And we see them all over the media everyday. They look so yummy that they are so hard to resist.

Yes, A lot of Americans are obese. There are more than one factor involved. One of the things is it is just to easy to go to a fast food restaurant and there food is fried with grease or at least it used to be. We also have become a generation of couch potatoes and sitting in front of the computer. We like to snack instead of sitting down to a healthy meal. So I don't think it is a fact of us eating too much. It is the kind of food we are putting into our bodies and also a lack of exercise.

I think it's a combination of things. Portion size is one of them. I recently went to Texas Roadhouse and ordered a 12 oz. steak for dinner. I ate about a third of it and the rest went home and became parts of two more meals. At one time, I know I would have eaten the whole thing at one sitting. But since I don't run three miles a day and play frisbee with my buds any more, I'm not burning as many calories. So I don't have to take in as many calories. I know I still need to cut back. Or get more active. Probably a combo of both will be my solution.
But to answer the question - Yes, people generally tend to eat too much, too often; and they tend to do too little to burn off the calories they take in.

When we were kids, our parents used to tell us to finished whats on our plate despite that we are already full. And as grown up sometimes we forced ourselves to eat even though we are full to our chest. And with alot of technologies around that make us sit rather than exercise we tend to put on weight rather than burn them. I guess eventually we should re-educate people not to finish all food in one sitting, as portions can be cut and spread towards the day or eaten the next day, that way we wont be forcing food to our system that we can hardly burn. Kudos to your decision to bring food home rather than eat them all.

i got hungry just reading your questions and the post...lol.
yes, to all of the above...what we all have to do is the obvious..diet and exercise..
all my adult life i have battled (lost and gained_( but it is the fact that we do not want to deprive ourselves of what we like to do the best..eat..eat..and forget all that stuff about exercise..lol...
portion control? just stay away from most restaurants...or any buffet
I guess you won't get any good out of this post as I have quit smoking over twenty years ago..that did not help..but i feel better but food taste better too..lol
This problem is not going to go away soon..as the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak...

Portion sizes are too big, I can't eat a three course meal and sometimes struggle with a main and dessert. It is so bad, I'm considering either getting a starter and dessert or asking for a childrens menu and I'm between a size 12 and 14 dress size (UK size that is) so I'm not skinny.
I wish resturants and take aways would cut down the portion sizes, it may just help the obesity crisis.

I think restos wont cut the portion since many people are attracted to the size and largeness of the plate. Its really up to us to tell our tummy to stop. And just take out the portions we can't finish. Maybe restos should create small, medium, large and extra large plate. So that food wont be wasted and everyone just eat according to their tummy size and hunger.
