My sister needs a camera start This is her first course, and she has no experience, I do not want to spend a fortune, but am at a loss as to
what to get her. SLR or manual film, the type of model, secondhand or new?
Any ideas or guide would be really great. thx

If $250. is not too much, I would highly recommend the Olympus SP-550U. It has 7.1 MP and 18X optical zoom, a large preview screen and is thrifty on batteries.
It also allows panoramic shots, where the included software stitches up to 10 pictures together.
It goes to high speed and has shake stabilization. A 2GB card will give you nearly 500 pictures before the card is full.
Has the usual movie capability with sound of course. Amazing camera. Check the reviews on the internet.

Wow, I remember my first photography course - I was in 8th grade. I had (and still have) a Pentax K1000. It's a great camera. Usually the teacher of the course will suggest a certain camera with features they want their students to use. Requirements can vary from teacher to teacher. I would suggest speaking with the teacher for their input.
