Cheese Please!

I was given this tip about a month ago or more. I was told if I wrapped my open cheese block in tin foil instead of siran wrap it would last much longer without having the mold grow on it. It appears to be true. I open a fresh large block about two weeks ago and it smells as fresh as the day I opened it. No signs of mold or drying out or anything so far. Did you already know this tip? If you have tried this, how will do you think it works?

I did not know this trick. I am going to try it when I open my cheese. Our cheese is always getting dried out. Thank you for sharing this great tip.

I never knew that, but it seems logical. I think aluminum foil blocks out most of the air as opposed to plastic wraping. Anyway, thanks for the tip!

I never heard of that. Usually I put my cheese into an empty bread box and keep the store plastic wrapper on, but this time we bought the lite old cheese instead of the regular old cheese and it takes two weeks for us to finish it, so I have no idea whether the tin foil will work. I have no idea how it works except that the saran or plastic wrap RETAINS the moisture and makes the outside of the cheese hotter thereby increasing fermentation and the tin foil just protects it from the outside air. When we get tin foil, I will try this.

That is interesting. I normally don't buy cheese because I'm doing everything to save money, but this tip will be valuable for my mother and sister.

In my household, we avoid or use the minimum we can of foil (tin foil) I have read too many articles about the leaching of aluminum and it's health consquences. I do NOT use aluminum cookware either.

I totally forgot about this. I have heard the same thing about tin foil. Drats now what will I wrap my cheese in?

I just use a self sealing plastic wrap & make sure there is no air. I live alone, buy big blocks of cheese, and as long as I keep the cheese air tight I have no spoilage. Smiles!!

I've never heard this before. Actually seems like a helpful hint worth trying. It seems I'm always buying cheese and half of it ends up going to waste because it dries out so much faster than we use it. I used to use one of those bag and seal machines for things like this but then after a few years finding the replacement bags became difficult. I still use the machine to reseal some packages, but with cheese it seems the plastic gets torn too far to bother trying to salvage. Thanks for the tip. :)
