Salt question?

Do you put rice in your salt shaker to keep it from clumping up? I use glass salt shakers and I am always having to tap the salt shaker to force the salt to loosen. I remembered when I was a younger they had rise in the salt shakers in resturants. So I started doing it and now my table salt doesn't stick together anymore. So I guess it works. Does anyone else put rise into their salt shakers?

I do not, even though I live in a high humidity area I have not had troubles with my sea salt clumping up - now other spices I do have that trouble with. maybe I should try the rice in them. my mother keeps rice in many of her spice shakers.

I wouldn't suspect you would have trouble with the sea salt because it is much larger granduales. Regular tables salt is so fine and can't handle the moisture I guess. I don't know but I do know that when I had wood or pottery salt and pepper shakers I had no problem but when I started using glass and crystal then it did start to clump and I started to use the rise to solve the problem.

We've never done it personally. In fact, I didn't even really know about this trick until I was reading something online somewhere that brought it to my attention, and then it seemed when I went to certain restaurants I realized they had rice in the salt shakers. So, we don't use it, but we've never had a lot of trouble with clumpy salt, so I guess that's a good thing.

I think the problem is mostly in glass or crystal shakers!

I knew this worked as I've seen it many times in homes and restaurants. Actually, I don't use salt anymore. Have learned to eat everything from corn on the cob to popcorn without salt. Takes time but I adjusted. Once in awhile I'll use a salt substitute. Rice does reduce the clumping in salt.

I heard about people putting rice in their salt shaker. My foster mother used to do that, but I am not a great salt lover, so we do not put salt on our table. I do find that the box of salt often clumps up and gets solid. I have some Kosher salt that I keep in a jar but I have not used it yet.

Yup I put rice in my salt shakers too. It works great. The rice soaks up all the moisture and the salt runs freely.

I always put rice in my salt shakers that I use at the stove. If I don't, the holes get clogged from salting steamy foods. I also put rice in the table shakers, but I'm not sure it's needed there, since this is a dry climate.

I put a dried pea in my salt shaker this works as well as rice. My nanna told me about this years ago.
