Have you read this book? Have you read one like it? Have you bought one lately? If the book title that I mentioned in my Subject Line is real, I apologize for stealing it. I truly thought that I made it up. A few days ago I answered a discussion from a lovely woman who had a "put yourself down" word in her screen name. If she wouldn't have said that she had come from an abusive childhood and an abusive marriage, perhaps I wouldn't have noticed; but I think I would have. Please stop and think of all the money the writers who have written books for "Dummies" and for "Idiots" have made. Have you purchased any of those books with just the thought that the book was written in a simplistic language that the everyday person would be able to understand. It makes sense if you think that. But please, just for one moment, if you are a young person, how would you feel if your parents,a teacher, or some other adult called you a Dummy or an Idiot. If you are a parent, would you ever think to call your child a Dummy or an Idiot? Would you ever teach your child that it is alright to call others these names? If you are in a verbally abusive relationship, how do you feel being called a Dummy or an Idiot? Using that kind of thinking; Why in the he!! do we actually pay writers that we don't even know to call us those words? Those are degrading words that have no place in our language. You may think this is a trivial thing and not worth wasting time thinking about; but it is just these little things that build up over time that serve to crush our spirit, that serve to trample on our self-confidence, and that tear away at our ego. I urge you to please think again before you purchase a book such as this. There are many other How-To books at book stores that are equally simple to follow. If you have difficulty finding one you can go to the library and ask the librarian, or you can go to an online bookstore and search yourself by choosing a book title and reading the reviews. There are many other resources out there that don't demean you in any way.~Donna

I understand how you feel but I beg to differ. There are so many things that I admit I do not know much about and I don't mind saying that I am a 'dummy' in that area....or a 'zero' in that field. As long as it is not intentional abuse and I'm calling myself one, I don't mind. In fact, when I pick up a book for dummies, I admit I am one....but only in that certain area. Now if the book was titled 'The Book for Dummies', I would still pick it just for the heck of it. I'm not offended by the term because the writer wasn't targetting me. And no one forced me to pick the book up because I am a dummy..I chose it myself. If anyone feels that the term is offending, they can chose NOT to read it...and like you mentioned there are other books and resources that one can use. http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1291831.aspx Check out this discussion...it runs on similar lines.

I understand what you mean but being "ignorant" of certain things only means you are unlearned in that area, and only because you have not been taught..Being a dummie sounds so much like putting yourself down...I do think that we are all unlearned or ignorant of certain things...but when we learn boy are we strong!

I agree and I don't mean to put down your opinion. It's only that 'I', personally don't care for that tag in a book. I don't take it personally. But what Kitchen said was absolutely right and I will think twice before I pick such a book. I read anything and everything and if it's something I don't think is right for me, I just don't pick it up. There's only one Dummies book that I've read and it was about something that I already knew...so it didn't really affect me. I don't look at book titles most of the time and it's usually the content that I go through before I buy a book. Anyways, I appreciate what you are trying to say...I only wanted to put my opinion across and didn't say it was the right one...but it's right for me.

SViswan, Thank you so much for your opinion. Please do not apologize for having one different from mine. I love the fact that MyLot is a forum for mature discussions. You posed valid reasons for your opinion and you most certainly have a right to feel as you feel. Thank you also for sharing the link. I had to giggle a bit when I went there to read it because it made me sort of happy to see that someone else was thinking along the same lines and questioning if it did bother anyone. Thank you for responding.~Donna

I agree with you Donna! I never really liked the idea of those books and I couldn't quite figure out why - but I believe what you said must be it!! I just never really looked at it like that before! You're most certainly right - I don't like being called dumb or anything of the sort (in jest is different of course). I think it this is one of those little things that over time we've gotten use to and it slowly eats away at us. Something small that we don't really notice right off hand...but it adds up over time.

As a matter of fact i have read one of those books, but i did not buy it,my friend had one and let me borrow it..I believe it was about computers, learning computers for Dummies, but it was so stupid really that i did better on my own....I really do not think that people are dummies or idiots just because they may be ignorant of some things that they have not experienced yet...I am sure that at one time or another we have all been ignorant of some things, but being ignorant only means you do not know yet,but it certainly does not make you an idiot or stupid.....Don't worry i do not plan on buying one of those dummie books...You Donna, have been a wonderful inspiration to me, and i really appreciate your positive thinking..You have helped me to clear up a lot of things in my mind, and have taught me to think highly and not to put myself down,,I use to think there was something wrong with me, but through you i have found that i was mistaken...Thanks so much for all of your imput...Ellen

Thanks for letting me know you found my link, Donna. I feel more strongly than most people I know about the impact of language. It can empower us or be subliminally destructive--or even overtly so. Lol, maybe I should write a book called Language as a Battering Ram.
