Peter Petrelli, hands down! He can take on the power of any other "hero" he encounters. That would make his powers endless!

How can you say that the haitian has the strongest powers? All he can do it erase memories. Peter Petrelli can imitate the power of anyone he encounters and, by that reasoning, he would imitate the haitian's powers too!
He can heal like Claire, teleport like Hiro, fly like Nathan, manipulate matter, be invisible.... come on! No way is the power to erase memory stronger than that!
AND!!!!!!!.. The haitian erased Peter's memory and he actually got it back!

The Haitian's power goes beyond erasing memories. It seems you've not seen the complete 1st season yet so I'm not going to spoil it for you and tell you all that the Haitian can do.

I would say Peter's power, since he can collect any power and use it so no matter what the power is he can have it.

uhmmm the power or the person?
I think there is no powerfull power because every power is same... but... if you ask the person...
the person must be peter & sylar...
can you imagine just if peter can do what the haitian can do... peter could stop anybody with haitian mute ability...

Peter's power is the most powerful once he has encountered others. In the first season, however, he was matched by Sylar, who has intuitive aptitude. Although it is a different mechanism, it is used by Sylar for much the same purpose.
So, Peter can empathically absorb powers just by being near to other heroes. That seems superior to Sylar's intuitive aptitude at first blush, but lets think of other situations.
Before Peter and Sylar are exposed to other heroes (remember the question is who's power is strongest, not which character is currently strongest) neither can do much of anything unique.
Before Peter encounters others with Powers, he has no verifiable abilities. He might be resistant to the powers of others, as he has shown an ability to see the invisible man and could move even when Hiro stopped time. However, for all we know the resistance to the powers of others is just another power he has absorbed from someone he met along the way.
Peter's control over powers that he mimics varies. He seems to have a harder time using powers that require active concentration. Originally, he could only manifest a power in proximity to the person he absorbed it from. (This later changed.) It should also be noted that he doesn't have the choice to absorb or not absorb a power. Therefore, if he was put in the presence of a Hero with a cursed sort of power that makes him sick like a cancer or threatens to make him self-explode.
Sylar, meanwhile, before meeting other heroes has a power which can do something demonstrable. He can analyze any system he comes across intuitively and with little need for equipment. He can analyze mechanical and biological systems. And this analysis has allowed Sylar to kill other Heroes and take their powers. Before meeting other people with Powers, he might have been able to use his system to understand how things work. Like security systems, computer systems, financial systems, jackpot machines, and the like. A power like Intuitive aptitude could have been used to 'bootstrap' wealth. This, in the absence of people with powers, Sylar's power could have an interesting effect.
Introducing people and powers, Intuitive aptitude, it is the same as Peter's ability with the exception that 1) Sylar can choose which powers to absorb. 2) He must, apparently, kill his victim to gain their powers. 3) Is there any established reason why Sylar can't give someone *else* a power that he steals from someone. 4) He typically masters powers he steals faster than the people he steals them from -- presumably because his power can tell him how the other powers operate. 5) One would expect that his power would allow him to analyze and understand the limits and circumstances of other heroes' powers as well. These are not powers that Peter possesses.
While killing people to get their powers is a downside, of course, determining the 'stronger' power requires some value judgments. I would probably side with Sylar -- if one were willing to kill to acquire powers.

I go with Peter Petrelli, too. If he meets the Haitian, he gets the Haitian's power as well. The ability to absorb every other power is pretty phenomenal. As far as Hiro goes...I like his character, but one of these days, he going to crap himself straining so hard!

I am not that far into the series yet, I only started watching season 1 last week from my computer that a friend gave me. Its really good but I am only coming into the people and their powers now.
I think that the cheerleader has got an awsome power, I would kill to have that power...

Peter Petrelli is the most powerful because he absorbs powers of people he encounter.
