Holy cow is all I can say. The Monte Carlo Casino in Las Vegas is on fire. It's on MSNBC right now. The thick, black smoke is pouring from the top rooms. It's a 32 story casino with something like 3,000 rooms. Our daughter and son-in-law are both firefighters but we are in Missouri. If they were in Vegas I'd be having a breakdown.

I read your discussion when you first posted it and went on another news site to check into it then got side tracked and forgot I never responded. At the time I was reading the report there had been no injuries - I'm thankful of that as that is a huge place and thousands of people inside. I can understand how you would feel if it was in your area, that must be very difficult having a daughter and son-in-law both firefighters.

The news this morning said there were 17 people sent to the hospital with smoke inhalation. Could have been alot worse. The only time I really get unnerved, when our daughter is on duty, is when there is an extra news report that mentions a fire and it's in the area where she is working. There are no high rise apartments or condos in her district..........whew! Thanks for responding.

Wow I saw this on the news tonight! At least the fire was at the top of the hotel and not the bottom so everyone could get safely out. They say that they do not know the cause of the fire but that welding was going on up there. People should really be more careful. That must be very tough for you having two family memebers that are firefighters. You must also be very proud.

The firefighters worked hard to get this fire under control and did a good job. At first it looked as though the fire was going to run rampant and do more damage. Estimated 17 injuries and all are supposedly smoke inhalation. I am very proud of our daughter. The fire equipment weighs about 80 lbs. alone. But, I worry about her at the same time. It's all in a day's job to her. Mama over here cringes when I know she's on her way to a fire. Thanks for responding.

Dang, that looks horrible but thankful that no one was injured bad or killed. Sounds like it was started on the outside of the building. I am sure you are on edge each time your daughter and son in law are called out, I know I would be.

The important factor is the fire seems to be contained. Whew, no injuries or deaths. Investigators are saying it may have been sparked by welders on the roof. The fire might be contained but it's still not safe for those firefighters to be up there. I am better off not knowing when my daughter is going out on a fire call. It does make me nervous although the area where she works has no high rise apartment or condos..............whew! Thanks for responding.

Oh my gosh! I have to check it out! I wouldn't blame you if you did have a breakdown if they were there! HOpe everyone is alright!

The fire is contained now so all is ok. The flames were unbelieveable for over an hour but looks as though the damage is moreso on the outside of the building. Thanks for responding.

Hi Carol, We live in Las Vegas, and the thing that scared most here was the remembering of the MGM Hotel fire in the eighties; eighty people were killed. But Las Vegas has changed a lot since then, and along with enormous amount of growth, both on the Strip and everywhere else in Vegas, came safety. The Strip is equipped with several fire depts. in the immediate vicinity, all trained for just this type of emergency. The Monte Carlo is only about twelve years old, and along with many, many other newer casino/hotels, they've changed most of what went wrong in the MGM Grand; including building material. We here in Las Vegas were just relieved no one was injured and that the fire was under control quickly.

Vegas is beautiful and the weather is awesome. I'm jealous..lol When I initially saw the fire it looked as though the building was going to go. Was spreading awfully fast. I admire the firefighters who were able to get the fire under control in a resonable amount of time with limited injuries. I do remember the fire in the '80's. Since that time, I've been to Vegas twice and enjoyed my visit immensely. Thanks for responding.
