If you could live on another planet would you?

At the ripe old age of 60 you have to know I've been hearing and reading about the possibility of living on Mars since I was a kid and the thought has always been in my mind. I've always had this picture in my mind of being able to look down at the earth through some telescope and laugh at all of the people who stayed their over crowded planet because they were afraid to try something new. I'm sure eventually Mars would become just as bad as the earth in all aspects but it's nice to dream isn't it?
Would you give it a try if it were possible to live on another planet other than earth? Would you see it as a challenge to start a new civilization in a place where there wasn't any?

Since Mars seems to be the only fairly inhabitable planet for human beings it would be the only one I would think of going to even for a visit...lol...

I wouldn't. You are only happy if you are around same or similar climate that you grew up with...
I wouldn't like all red rocks around me....lol

Yes, but the fun would be in knocking down all those red rocks and watching building go up where they used to be. Starting a whole new civilization where there was none....what do you think?? lol

I think I would probably give living on another planet a try..as long as it is better than earth..as long as I would be more comfortable and the weather was more normal..I don't think it would be a challenge to start a new civilization as long as there are people there that I know..

I think it would be quite a challenge starting a new civilization. I would hope there were a lot of rules that everyone would have to go by to be able to even go there.

I suppose I would give it a try if it were deemed safe. I have always been rather adventurous and it would be fun to blaze a new trail. One of my daydreams is to close my eyes and imagine what our country looked like to the pioneers as they began developing it. No highways, billboards, skyscrapers and other things...just trees, mountains, rivers, streams and animals!

I have a couple of very old pictures of when my great grandparents were trailblazing to Oklahoma and I daydream myself into them...lol...what an experience that must have been.

No thank you - I am perfectly happy keeping my feet firmly planted on American soil and have never had any desire at all to travel to another planet for any reason what so ever.
Ok, I have flown many many times but am nervous every time - something not right about that chunk of metal being up in the air, I know would go into panic attachs getting into a space ship.

I've only flown once since 911 and it was the first time flying for my youngest son, went to SD for #2 son's wedding. It was a nightmare for me but Shane loved it and even said he'd like to be a pilot - NO WAY!
#2 son actually flew the week after 911 and didn't tell me about it until months later because he knew I would have a fit - he just wanted to see what happened, no crowds was his big report.

lol....so many people feel that way about flying. Luckily I'm not one of them. I think I would enjoy that 6 month or so ride in a space ship.

Gee, ctry, I don't know that I'd want to live on another planet due to all that I've learned from Sci-fi movies and books. Either the life forms or environments are usually hostile to humans, and that wouldn't sit to well with me, lol. I am sure that if we ever colonize a distant planet, though, it would be a great experience.

Since it doesn't seem to be inhabited I think it would be safe enough! lol....safer than it is down here on earth anyway. Not to mention I think I would feel safer with aliens than some of the so called humans we come in contact wich on earth.

I'm not sure if I would want to STAY on Mars, but I'd leap at the chance to just go out into space and see all there is to see! I would rather go on a jaunt through a worm-hole and end up somewhere else (so long as I can get back! lol), but Mars is a great start.
Even where I live I try to take different routes home or when we have the time, just take a road to see where it goes. I tell my kids we can't get lost so long as we end up somewhere! Lots of people do not understand why I like to do this, but I have seen some great vistas and sights that you'd never get to see unless you take that lesser traveled path or new way (or long way) home.
Anyway, back to your question -- I would not be in it to actually start a new civilization, but rather to experience it all; Good topic.

No. I am not leaving. I am of the earth and from of the earth. When we destroy the earth, I am going down with it. I have never had any curiosity about other planets. I guess I got to see all I wanted to see watching Star Trek, the original series.

Well at the ripe old age of 59 I'm right behind you!! I would love to go "visit" and explore the possibilites...then maybe I would come back to earth and pack up for the long haul!!! My grandkids are too sweet to leave for any length of time...but it could be a great deal...the adventure of a lifetime!!! Good topic...now I'll head to bed and dream of my new digs on Mars!!! LOL

hmmm... Yes!!! It's getting boring here on Earth, everything is mundane plus i'm big on sci-fi's so why not? But i must admit, if i see the slimy freaking alien i'm so outta there. That's if i'd be able to make it. haha

of course !! the very idea of starting a civilization sounds very fascinating to me.....just wonder those who will come up on the planet after us will remember our names for ages to come....just as we know Adam and Eve .
moreover i am a total traveling freak ,so no matter how is it going to be there i would love to go there..

Probably not on Mars or the Moon.
But another Earth like planet... most definitely.
Think of the excitement of being the pioneers of founding a new colony on a new planet. This would take us back 220 years with the pioneering of Australia.
Of course... you are 60... and I am 56. Our generation has not forgotten the basic survival skills we were taught as children. That makes it all the more exciting for us... as we would love to use our basic skills and knowledge gained along the years.
I would most definitely see it as a challenge... and it would be a challenge I would win... providing that the people in the expedition do not bring with them all the wrong values from Earth.
We need open minded free thinking people with no law book and no bible. We need intelligent people who recognise where we went wrong here... so as not to repeat the same mistakes.

This is really very hypothetical, but suppose such an alternate planet had all the life sustaining conditions that earth has, is already inhabited or civilization already exists, has the natural resources for humankind to tap on to thrive, then I may give it a shot and try living in such a place. But I must be able to bring my family and relatives along with me, because this proposition will not be so attractive to me if I have to leave them behind. Realistically though, I don't see such a scenario happening, at least not in my lifetime. Mankind has explored the universe to find other lifeforms and planets which can be inhabited, but so many years have transpired and there doesn't seem to be much progress in realizing this.

no, because I am too set in my ways..i have been to Europe and Asia and Mexico..this was all interesting and I have worked in a few major cities in the US but I always come back to my home town as this is where my roots are..but my wife is from the Philippines and the last three times she has gone home..for a visit..she gets very sick as her immune system can't take the Philippine climate or the culture shock..after a month she misses her car, American Food, doctor, and I guess her husband..i went with her 11 years ago and spent three weeks in the Philippines and I one week in Tokyo, Japan...this was in December and the Philippines was to hot but when I got to Japan it was about fifty degreees F and I felt like a different person..but my wife was so sick she did not enjoy herself at all...so what would a different world be like?
The only movie that made sense to me was an oldie called "Forbidden Planet"
This was where "robie" the robot started and he could make anything if he got a sample..booze? yep..and there was of course a beautiful women who never saw a man other then her father...but that is every mans dream..lol...fantasy

Definitely...YES! I'm still young so I'm pretty sure I'll see something about Mars...but know a thing? The Red Planet doesn't attract me, it seems too much close, too easy to get on...I've been always fascinated by distant planets, by those places we can't (by now) reach...As I child I remember I loved Uranus and Neptune, for example, and Saturn for his amazing "Rings"...And apart from our Solar System...I still spend sometime reading thing about astronomy..."you may say I'm a dreamer, but (at least) I'm not the only one!"...:-)
