Adopt or buy?

Would you rather adopt a dog, or just a pet in general, from the humane society, or seek out a specific breed and buy? I recently did a survey project, and this was one of the questions I asked people. Surprisingly, everyone said they'd adopt,...well it was only 10 people, but it still surprised me. I would definately adopt. I love the feeling that you are giving a homeless animal a home, plus I love the ecclectic/random types of animals you can meet at humane societies.

I would rather adopt because some humane societies put the dogs down after so long if noone adopts them. I think the dog appreciates you more as well if you rescue it because apparently noone wanted the dog because it's in a humane societies. Plus at the end of the day you will prob. feel better because you may have saved a dogs life!

I wouldn't even adopt, I'm in the rescue buisness. I've got 24 rescued cats.

I personally would rather get an animal from the humane society. I just feel better for adopting and giving a pet a home when they have none. It doesn't seem right to buy a pet when I could save them.

I think i will also adop. How you said i love that feeling that you will give a home to a dog who has nobody to take care of him. Every day you just listen so many stories about dogs left on the street, straving and cold, so i would like to help them.

Well, I have one dog that was adopted, but not from a shelter. We at a youth rodeo and some people had brought a litter of puppies to give away. And I ended up falling in love with the little guy. (Who now weighs 95 pounds!!!!!!!!!!)(He is also neutered) The rest of my dogs are purebreds that were bought, and they are all males. I stand them at stud, for other people to breed their females to. So adopting from a humane society doesn't really work for me, but for someone who just wants a companion dog or family pet for non specific puroposes, I recommend adoption at a local shelter. My stud dogs are Australian Cattle Dogs and one Brittany spaniel. Working cow dogs and a bird dog. Bred for specific purpose and they are used for that as well as breeding.

You can find purebreds at the local shelter too. I've got an AKC registered black lab that was dumped because he kept knocking over a small child. The shelter knew my history with labs and wanted to know if I'd foster. I went and saw him and 3 years later, he's mine as I adopted him.

I always adopt! I recently adopted a 1 year old Silky Terrier. I was surprised to find such a breed with the humane society! It just makes more sense to me to adopt. Those pure breed dogs are going to get adopted but the humane society dogs don't always end up so lucky!

I prefer buying dog of specific breed. Adopting is always connected with some risk (unknown dog history). :/

Well i wouldnt get a dog weather adopting or not, cause i dont really like them all that much.. They drool and lick they own butts. However if i was getting a kitty i wouldnt mind either way, adopting an older one or getting a new kitten. New kittens are fun, but older kitties apprietiate the hospitality more i think. especially if they are in the shelter cause they were abused.. :( poor kitties.

It would depend on whether I just wanted a dog as a pet or I wanted a pure bred and was planning to raise dogs for show or have a specific dog for a certain task. If you want a pure bred, it is usually better to buy because they will have papers to show if that dog is a good dog and has nothing wrong with him. Mind you if I were getting a pure dog, she would be part of the family but I am going to make sure that no stray gets at her, so she would be spoiled. We always got mutts, and they were easy to get along with, it seems they have the combined best natures of all the breeds so I would rather get a dog from the SPCA as long as the dog is friendly and yet chases burglars away and is cute. As to why, money is the factor and also space. If I lived in the country or had a large estate, I would get a pure breed, call her Lady, or something like that.

I think I'd rather adopt...they are already in a bad situation and if I can get them out of it...you bet I would. I like all kinds of dogs and cats so breed isn't that important. Alot would depend on how much space I have too. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I have gotten dogs and cats from the animal shelters as well as from private individuals, I have not gone to a pet store to buy a cat or dog ( but have other pets from them) anymore I am likely to go direct to a breeder or if I am patient enough go to a family that might be moving and not able to take their pet with them. the animal shelters are charging way too much for us to go that route. we have friends that provide animal rescue services.

I wouldn't adopt a dog it is not a child. Maybe it is nice to have a cute puppy.

I often wanted to take home those cute puppies at the mall stores, but when I go into a humane society or other adoption agency it always changes my mind. Yes, my kids wanted a cute puppy but I wanted a dog that was already potty trained and was good with the kids and protective. Yes I wanted a small lap dog and we ended up with a bigger border collie. But it was a nice surprise and even though my daughter still wants a chihuahua like her webkinz, she loves our dog. Actually I have always gotten my dogs from shelters or rescue centers and it does make you feel good.

I never bought a dog and even if I have the means, I will never buy one. I would rather spend my money to feed and/or abandoned animals or help needy individuals. My dogs were either rescued or given by friends and they many not be the best looking dogs but they always invoke a good memory from the very time I have them with me.

always adopt rather than give away your money to a pet shop
