Fear of publishing

Fear - a scared turtle

After a lot of work made to write a certain thing, have you had fear of publishing it? I'm writing a story for about a year, now it's finished and I want to publish it (on internet communities, I'm not talking about professional writing) but I have a lot of stupid fears. And if they don't like it? And if no one reads it? And so on...

I think you should go for it. If you are really afraid though, maybe run it past a few friends first and see what they think.

My sister and two friends have already read it and like it a lot, but they have similar tastes than me...

They have similar interests like yours? Then the more reason you should publish it. There's that possibility that other people in the net have similar intersts. Some people will eventually read it. So what if some people don't like it? A conflict of interest.

i am sure every author has felt like this at some point, but you have to go ahead and take a leap of faith, surely there will be SOMEONE out there that likes it...hey, even i have been able to sell some writing at one point...

You are being too hard on yourself. I should know, I've done it too. I have said over and over again that I cannot write articles. That I am not a "journalist" per se, but a story teller. Well, I have published a few articles on Triond and my writing friends keep at me that I certainly can write articles and very well. Really, you never know unless you try. Give it a shot. You might surprise yourself.

Fear is what holds most writers back. It's not called writer's block anymore. It's called fear - fear of being successful or fear of being unsuccessful. Either way it is fear and lack of confidence. I feel it all the time. It's perfectly normal. We must presevere and overcome!

The strangest thing is that I KNOW that the story is good: I've read a lot of stories by internet authors and mine is above average for sure and refined in every details. But I have fear the same and I don't know why. I think of all the work I've done, and if no one reads it it would be all wasted. And they could not like it coz the morality in there is a bit questionable.

There are many things you can do. First depending on how long it is... let friends read it or people you know on the internet. Make it into a .PDF (if you need help contact me) and get a sense of what is good and what is not so good. In the US there are companies that will publish small quantities of books so you are not left with thousands of unsold copies of books. If you are writing then go for it. If you love it then do it. Don't be afraid. If all it does is please you then that is enough

If you write for fun than the pleasure is writing the book to begin with in the first place. If you have people who already like it, that is GREAT! So what if they like what you like... you are writing for YOU not someone else.

thanks for the advice but I'm not thinking of making money out of it. I write more for fun than anything and I know this kind of story can't get published

Ah, I have suffered the very same thing. Pople above have suggested letting some of your friends read it and see what they think, but I could never do that! I didn't want them to think I was a bad writer because I respect a lot of them as writers. I started by publishing stuff under a different name; it didn't matter if people I didn't know didn't like my work much. And people are often really nice about commenting and critiqueing on publishing cites. Once I'd got my confidence up this way I published under my own name (well, my online pseudonym) and told all my friends. It worked for me :) Set up an account on DevaintArt.com or a similar site and try it.

interesting advice but it's a sequel of another story I've written so I can't pretend to be someone else: they know that's me :) And I'm too proud of my story to give the merits to some alias Everybody: and if you're proud why you have fear Me: I don't know! *hides in her turtle shell*

I wrote the first one in 5 days (the story strucked me like a thunder) and everyone loved it, even a friend of mine who's a VERY difficult reader . But I managed to have only 10-12 readers by menacing them one by one: most of my online friends read only fanfic. This one, I've written it in 1 year and my expectations are much more. It's ten times complicated But I'm gonna do this, only I have to think of the right way to get readers .___.

*taps turtle shell* Did people like the first one? If so that should give you more confidence, right?

I guess this is the first time you are going to publish your work. Well, you should go ahead and take the next step, when you will actually prove to yourself that you are able to write works that can inspire other people. You said, that someone from your family have already read your story and they like it. You have mentioned that they are of the similar thinkings and have the same interests like you... well, i'm sure you will find out that there are hundreds of people who think the way you do. And be sure, you will get the response you are not even expecting to get. It is a "must" to publish your work if you really want to do that. Fears always appear when a person starts something and doesn't know what will be there, in the future, how people will react, what will they say. If you want to become a writer in the future, you have to face both - the negative and the positive. And you should be strong enough to judge yourself in accordance to the response from the people. Your fears will leave you automatically after you publish your work, so you have to take that step to move yourself a level higher than you are at the moment. And i'm sure you won't regret ever.

Thanks for the kind words. It's not really the first work published (I've written a lot of fanfic and 1 original story), but for this one I've too much high expectations. I've finally understood that my worst fear is that no one reads it and I've worked for nothing. But if I'm not gonna publish it now then no one will read it for sure :) I've really enjoyed in writing it

Maybe you could put it out a chapter at a time on a blog. Let the readers see the story unfold over a period of time. I have a story that I need to dig up and perhaps do the same. It's based on a very vivid dream that I had over 20 years ago. Even my screen name came from that dream. I started writing down the dream the next day at work on my breaks. I just gotta find that old notebook. I do hope you put it out in some form. Let us know. And don't worry about the language. Many browsers have an ability, or at least an add-on, that will translate from one language to another.
