The economy

Did you see the President? He says that the answer to getting our economy back on track, is the free trade between countries. I tend to disagree. I think it is more getting our jobs back here. He says we can have more customers and get them buying things made in the USA. It is getting to the point that there is not alot made in the USA. It is all being made in other countries, even our factories are leaving and going to places where they can make a better profit. I just don't see his way of thinking, do you? It gives terrorists more of a chance of poisoning all of us, sneaking things into our country, let alone taking our jobs. What are your thoughts?

Yes, but you are forgetting one thing the U. S. unemployment level has been and remains for the last 7 or 8 years much lower than it was in the seventies.

That statistic alone can be very misleading, which is why I'm sure not surprised that the current Administration loves to cite it every chance they get! For one thing, there are many people who have given up looking for work so they're not included in the unemployment figures. Also, there are many who have lost good, high paying jobs with good benefits including health insurance and have gotten lower paying jobs - sometimes they're working 2 or 3 jobs to try to replace the one they lost - so they're also not included in the figures but they've been affected by our bad economy just the same. I've lived through quite a few recessions in my lifetime and while we always tend to think the one we're experiencing NOW is the worst ever, this time I believe that to be true. I just heard today that for the first time in 4 years we've lost jobs; if that's actually admitted to it must be bad! Annie

Yeah you are definately right reguarding the fact that we need to bring industry back to this country. I don't understand how we can help our economy by outsourcing jobs to other countries. This is one of the reasons I sort of like Mike Huckabee for the 2008 election. One of his goals is to bring industry back to America.

I am not an American but I have heard news of the economy crisis there. We cannot also blame the corporations or companies why they transfer their factories or offices in places where they could spend less and earn more. Just imagine that for example a factory worker in your area has a salary of 1000 dollars a month and here in our country they can hire someone at 200 dollars a month only. So instead of having 1 person for 1000 dollars they can have 5 person working for the same job which is of course obviously much more productive.

I agree with you. I know we need to have some trade between other countries, being an isolationist isn't good for anyone, but it's gone too far. I remember a time when most of our goods were made right here, when "Made in the USA" label was easy to find. Remember the old commercials about looking for the union label? I sure do, and back then there were plenty of factory jobs all over the U.S. they weren't the best jobs around but they were better than nothing and they paid more than flipping burgers or working in convenience stores which are the only real options for some people without a college degree. I've seen three places close and the jobs go elsewhere. No other places opened to take the place of/employ those people. Most of the people left. No one wants to buy their homes. It has really hurt the area I live in. Originally the low paying jobs were supposed to leave and we were all supposed to get higher paying jobs. Many people here have been retrained and still can't find work. The theory they started out with is flawed. But if we try to take our jobs back the stock market correction could be a depression. However without getting our jobs back, we could go into one anyway, just take longer to get there.

I have to agree with you. I'll go out of my way to buy something made in the USA just to try to do my part in a small way to help support jobs here. It's becoming increasingly difficult to find American made products. My husband has worked in a steel mill for over 30 years, and has seen first hand how the industry and jobs have been affected by manufacturers buying foreign steel, which in many cases is cheaper, but poorer quality.
