I think you should get a border collie, i have 2 they're great with kids and the most loving dogs ive ever known.you have to be prepared to walk the every day though as if they dont get their exercise they get bored and can become destructive. Good look with your new dog whatever breed you choose!!

The dog that you choose is the right dog for you. It all depends on the training of the owner. I know the golden retriever was mentioned. I own 2 of them. They have not distroyed anything in my home. I have one that LOVES other dogs and one that wants nothing to do with them. They bark at any noise they hear. They are excellent with my 9 year old. Somehow they both know when it is time for my daughter to get off the bus at the end of the street. They cannot see her coming down the street, but they are both at the window looking in that direction 15 minutes or so before the bus arrives. Keep in mind it is the adults responsibilty to train the dog. GOOD LUCK with the choice you make!

If you don't mind a bigger dog then the ones mentioned here already I would go for a Golden Retriver. The ones I have met have all been great with kids and they are friendly to everyone. But do some research before you decide, think if you want a small or big dog, how much time you have for it and what kind of personlaity you want the dog to have. (I know they all got a personality of their own, but different breeds got a bit different personlaity and needs). When you find a dog you like you will have a long time friend in him. Good luck!

Actually my brother had a golden retriver and yeah he very friendly and great with kids but they only problem is they alot of damages to his home. My brother had to replace his steel fence twice because the dog wanted to attack other dogs. And when a stranger would come in or pass by he wont bark. I live in an apartment I think the golden retriver would make lose my deposit hehe. Thanks for that thought

I mentioned your post to my wife and she says that a Boston Terrier might be a good choice. She says they're good around children, and because they are small would be suitable to have around the house. Being small might also keep the limit the oost of feeding the dog. When she was young she had a dashound, which she she might be another good choice. Of course you have to watch out for them. One time her candy was missing from atop a tall chest of drawers and her sister insisted that the little dashound had jumped up and eaten it. "It was the darnest thing!" she explained. Hope you find a fun dog for your kids. goodbuys4you

I think you should go to the shelter and have a look around. There are lots of wonderful dogs in shelters and rescues that need a loving home, and then you can also get a dog that has grown out of the insane puppy year(s) and is somewhat more settled and housebroken.

Very good point on the settled and housebroken!! I had already thought and most probably will go to a pet shelter to give one of these dogs a chance to live but just wanted to get an idea of what breed to get.

Golden retrievers have already been mentioned, but Labrador retrievers are also a good breed too. We have a black Lab and she's been with our family for over 2 years now. She's very lovable and plays nice with the kids. She is also not much of a barker - which is lucky for us. She only barks if she sees a stranger near or in the house. Especially men. :) The only downside to retrievers are their size. We couldn't get a big dog until we moved into our current house because the inside was way too small. We had a dachshund for a short while cuz my husband likes them. But we didn't keep her very long cuz she refused to potty train outside. (a common problem with doxies) The downside to retrievers are their size. Is your house big enough for a big dog to run around without knocking everything off? Also bigger dog means bigger poo - where is your dog going to go potty?

Large dogs are out of the question for right now. Not unless i get a house but that is going to be a while from now. And of course the poo is too big for large dogs. I used to have some mix dog and it was pretty large and I had alot poo to clean.... no thanks hehe

Ah, you want a dog that you can have at home, is great with kids, and is not too messy. Well, for Valetine's Day several years ago I gave a cudly stuffed dog to my girlfriend, and she named it PuppyLove. That girlfriend is now my wife and she still has that dog. We've even brought him to church the day we taught children's church and the kids enjoyed him. If you are determined to get a real dog, be sure to do your homework. A breed that is good for watching or herding should be better around kids than one that is suited for hunting. -John K, MyLot member goodbuys4you
