start off slow? or go for the gusto?

This question is more for experienced writers. When you first started out, did you start with short stories or did you go start out by writing a novel? What's harder - finishing a novel or fitting everything you want to say into a shorter format? I've been starting work on a novel, but since I've never really written anything before people keep telling me I should start with some short stories and articles and work my way up. What do you think?

I started with short stories and articles for little magazines. I also have had alot of poetry in publications. At the same time I had started my first book....and now the third one will soon be done. Good luck with your writing!

I have been writing most of my life, not published yet (unless you count the school newsletter), but I have always been told that my writing is good. One of the things that I do to keep from burning out is having several things on the go at once. I do short stories, poetry, advice articles and list goes on as well as writing my first novel. Writing should be about the journey, and pushing your boundaries. If you want to start with a novel, then go for it. You can always have other pieces to work on when you suffer the dreaded writers block.

That's a great idea. I'm working on a novel right now, but I do get bogged down, so having something that allows me to switch pace sounds really helpful.
