This is just a discussion because I'm curious. For those of you who like to write- do you like to write in personal journals or diaries? Is that a lost art replaced by blogging?
Why do you like to write in journals?
I used to write in a journal when I was younger and my mom read it, then advertised my poetry and every other personal thought I had ever written and that was 20 years ago. I had never written again in one until a few days ago and I realized how much I missed it...I just can't seem to get into the blog thing, I like a pen and paper but let me know some thoughts if you want.
Thanks for reading!

Before I got on myLot I used to blog on a social networking site. But it was usually just to rant. Lately I don't even log into that other site. I spend what little free time I have here. The people here have actually become more important to me then some of the people on the other site that I know in real life. LoL

I actually do both becuase I love blogging and writing in my journal my journal is for more personal stuff where my blogs are for general run of the mill everyday stuff that I don't mind sharing with the general populous. LOL!! But I do love pen and paper ... I tend to doodle a lot when I sit still for to long it's a habit since I always seem to be doing twenty things at once. LOL!

Not a prob. Blogs are actually kind of fun. I do them for the mundane I need to grip or I have a question and am pondering life! LOL!!! Trust me my doodling sucks too... I like abstract art because you can say just about anything is abstract are. these words on this page could be consider abstract art. LOL!!!!

Ooooohhhh, now that's an idea- abstract art...I'll have to keep that in mind if I ever have to take an art class in school.

That's one thing I completely suck at- drawing, even doodling..I wish I could that sometimes...My stick figures even suck! LOL
My journal is everything even the mundane stuff- I go through them pretty fast. Maybe I'll try a blog and see what I can come up with- who knows it might even be interesting for once.
Thanks for stopping by hun!

I still write in my journal my utmost personal thoughts. Mainly when I just need to vent. I don't think I should make that information public and sometimes I have no one to talk to and it just makes me feel better to get it all out. I also still write articles on paper sometimes before I transfer them to the internet.

Well, it is quite not easy to just hop into something different when you say that you have been used to something that you were comfortable with.
Some people still do journals or even personal diaries. It really depends for those who would follow if the medium that they'll be using would be pen and paper or immediately a computer and quickly have it shown in a website.
Its either we see it as an evolution or a lost practice.
I use to write a lot with pen and paper, I prefer pencils the most but now, I type since its more easier to do quick edits. But when it comes to real editing, I would rather have the manuscript printed so I could really do edits.
It was a good read ^_^

I love what you said about it being evolution or a lost art depending on how you look at it. I prefer printed to edit and my journal for thoughts that are a little deeper. Thanks for the comment.

I write in my blogspot (blogger) blog, my myspace blog sometimes and I also write a private journal.
My blogs are mainly to keep my family updated so I don't have to write or tell the same things over and over to everyone. Plus, it helps me keep a timeline when I go back and do photo albums and scrapbooking.
My own private journal is for my personal thoughts. It may talk about whatever negative things are happening in my life that I need to vent. I don't put that type of stuff in my blogs because for me, my problems are private.
I have had journals in a book and on the computer. Nobody reads them unless it is my husband and only because I let him. If I didn't want him to, he would never touch them.

Awesome husband- great self control. Most people are so curious they don't think about the effects of them looking at someone else's thoughts. People who are not into writing in journals are the ones that tend to do this and I'm so happy you and your hubby have that kind of understanding. Thanks for sharing your story.

I pretty much love to journal, whether it be in a pen and paper journal, or in my blog. I just like getting my feelings out, and since my feelings are usually things that I would tell my friends, or things that aren't important, I don't mind that others can read it. Mostly, if it's something I wouldn't want to share, I just don't write it down, or I write it down in a notebook. Sometimes, I even throw it away afterwards, if I really don't want anybody to read it.

Great stress reliever any way that you do it even of you do throw it away which is a great idea instead of not writing things down in some way, at least you can get it out and toss it.
Thanks for stopping by.

I used to write stuff in a diary till my husband once read it. It was mostly rantings about him ....lol and I was embarrassed. I stopped writing then (he never made an issue about it...infact, he took it in the right way and tried to change....but I still didn't like the fact that he read it...because I didn't mean everything written in it and I didn't want him thinking that I did).
I like pen and paper....but I find that I type faster now and prefer typing to writing. But when it comes to making my own notes for studying, I prefer writing, because I do the learning at the same time then.
I love typing...I dream about typing...wierd but true:P

My mom read mine when I was younger and I never did it again. For me it was a huge betrayal at the time, but curiousity gets the best of people most of the time. Especially ones that don't journal and don't understand what it can mean to someone. At least your husband, took away something from it. That could be a good thing. I always write my notes for school even though most people bring in their laptops and do it, it helps me to study better myself to write. Ok dreaming about typing is weird but maybe it means that you want to excel at it and see how fast you can get- oh wait that's me..
Thanks for the comment.

You know I still do both. There is just something so soothing about writing in a beautifully bound book and feeling the actual pen to the paper for me. I keep mine put away so no one reads it. It is very personal for me, and I say things in there I would never say out loud. This is something that means so much to me because I can vent and not hurt anyone's feelings. I am so sorry that you were betrayed like that! I can't fathom what that would do to me mentally if someone did that to me! Blogging for me is different than my journal. My journal is very private, my blogs well they are personal but not as personal as my journal. I would never put those things in a blog that I confess in my journal! Using pen and paper just make it seem much more personal to me.

My thoughts and feelings exactly. Journals are romantic and very private for me and you completely put that into beautiful words here. Maybe that's why I can't get into blogs- I don't feel free enough to fully write them as I would want. My journal is another story.
I think finally I'm over the betrayal from my mom and kicked myself for letting her take it away my story as I saw it. There are so many things that have happened since then as life rolled on and unfortunately I can't go back and read my "story" or how it was in the past. My life now is better than it has ever been which is why I picked up a pen again and I'm ecstatic about it. I do unfortunately have to hide the fact that I even have one because I still have a bit of fear about being "exposed" when I don't want to be. Time will heal I guess.
Thanks so much for the post. I like your screen name as well by the way. :)

By the way, it sounds like you feel about journals as I do. If someone did it to you- it may make you do what I did- never pick up a pen because of fear...:(

I understand why you quit writing, but I am so glad you are doing it again! Your story is your's and your's alone. Don't let anyone stop you again! Hiding your journal is a necessary evil at times and I do hide mine as well. I view my life as a journey, and it has good and bad points. I see how what I say in conversations can become misinterpreted, just think what it would be if they would read in my journal! So in order to keep the peace I make sure no one can find it. Thanks for the compliment about my screen name!

I enjoy both. There is something about recording one's thoughts with a pen and paper that has a unique feel to it. However, I have a program called Life Journal that I really enjoy. It has quotations that can be added and I am finding it equal to using personal journals and recording thoughts by hand. So I am a person who now likes to type as much as write...and I guess my answer is 50/50 depending where I am.

Nice answer. Life journal sounds interesting. The fact that you do 50/50 is interesting and fitting for you to me. You seem to be a very balanced person after much hard work and it seems fitting that you do both. Harmony and equal balance in life- good combination.
Thanks for stopping by Raia...

I do both! I do have a blog (4 of them actually), but my journal is for those really personal thoughts that I am not wanting to share with the world. Pen and paper are also very therapeutic for me when I'm stressed out or angry.

Absolutely agree with a pen and paper. Blogging seems fun and I like to read them on occasion but no idea why I can't get into writing them. Thanks very much for the response.

I do not really write in a journal, I do however, like to write. I write a lot of articles and some tutorials. I did not even know that I enjoyed it until I was in college and I found that I had a knack for it. I guess that if you percieve that you are good at something, whether it is true or not, you seem to enjoy it all the more.

I never thought I had a knack for it until teachers told me that I was good. I just liked doing it. I like writing research papers even- I must be nuts. But it helps definitely when other people read and like it- good confidence booster. :)

I love to write in my diary because they are private thoughts and no one else can read them, for blogs I like them to teach others something not to use as a diary because then everyone would be in my personal space. So I will just stick with writing in my diary.

I don't really keep a blog on my daily life unless I am away on a trip. I travel a lot and normally what I do is keep a journal in a diary while I am away and then type it up when I return or have a lazy day on my trip. I do think that people a generation or two older than me (I'm 21) write in a more accomplished, romantic way. My pieces tend to be rather jokily written, often including slang words.. hopefully they are still informative to someone though!

The great thing about writing is that your pieces are your own and when you are older you can look back and say "what the hell was I thinking" or "it was great to be young"-I do it often looking back. You have plenty of time for romantic thoughts and you probably still have to wait for someone to strike up that romance in you to write about it. Keep writing- that record of your life now will be priceless when you get older- even a little older. You can see how your mind and feelings have evolved- it sounds dorky to you now probably but you'll see later on. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I've already noticed that about things I've written 3 or 4 years ago! Some parts make me laugh, others make me cringe! Likewise I once found a forum post, I'd made when I was about 13.. it was full of teenage angst! I'm very happy I've evolved.. so to speak!

Why we are here in mylot is a simple reason most of us that we all here like to write. I feel complete everytime I write something. Ive been also active in school publications when I was in my high school and college. Yeah I also missed writing the time I stopped it.
Writing is a passion. It is a pastime. It is a gift. And we should share it to everyone.
Regards to you and to all your writings.

Writing is a passion and gift- pasttime and art. I never thought I was any good at it when I was younger and even now, it's everyone else who seems to like what I write and say which is ultimately how I feel deep down. I never realized how much I missed it until recently. I always had to do it in school and could do it easily but I missed emotional writing which I love to do and it's the easiest for me, I'm very happy that it's back. Most of the time sharing it makes me nervous to this day and sometimes there are things I don't share at all unless it's to the right person. Keep on writing and regards to you as well.

Sometimes I do. I generally do writing when it comes to story writing on paper 1st to see if it comes out 1st. Same with journal and very personal material. There are just some things I don't bring up online that I'm not particularly comfortable with. I do blog but not very often and when I do, I try to talk about other stuff that's not too personal. I've even done stuff about talking about my own web site for example.

Maybe I should read your blog- I have had a website idea in the works for a long time and can't get it together but then again I don't have a huge income to work with either..Like you I write on paper first- then rewrite and type. My journal though is left as whatever my thoughts are at the time with no edits maybe some scratch outs if I didn't feel I captured something right. Thanks for your comment
