You could just casually bring it up that a few of your books have had foodstains on them....and then maybe she will get the point without you actually having to say hey you messed my book up....so maybe that will work if it doesn't I really don't know what to tell you to do,without just having to bring it up and say whats going on!

I never lend books to anyone. I do not trust anyone to care for my books the way I care for them. Many treat books in a casual way, tossing them about, spilling on them, and consider them disposable - read it once and throw it away. I take pride in my extensive personal library. You need to just tell your good friend that you value her friendship too much and it is best that you no longer lend books to her.

That is a big deal. That is your property that you are lending her and she should have the decency to return them back to you in the same condition. Sorry if she returned them to me like that all the time I would talk to her and explain to her that the next time she does that I would not be lending her anymore books. I would explain to her that she could start getting them from the library and they do not allow books to be returned that way.

I'd tape a note in the inside cover that says something along the lines of "Please take care of me, others want to read me too."

If the two of you are good friends to begin with, then I'm positive that it really would not hurt to tell her about the books. I guess there's no need for some overly dramatic confrontation. Trite as it sounds, you just have to be true to each other.
