Books into Movies

There is a discussion of the Harry Potter books and movies. I've read and watched all of the books and movies that are out now.
I have also seen other movies that have been turned into movies, the Lord of the Rings being the most prominent. That one more follows the book then many movies, there had to be some cuts and variations due to the video processes, but the one part I most would have wanted to see was Tom Bombadil.
I have been going over in my mind some of the movies I wastched either before or after I read the book. I didn't realize how many I had actually done both. From the LoTR and Harry Potter, to Forrest Gump. Most are Sci Fi and Fantasy, as that was the genre I read a lot when I was in my 20s. Now there are ones like by Phillip K Diick whose many stories are being made into movies. And of course Michael Chricton, I think his writings are done with intent to be scripts now since most of his recent works were converted to big screen.
What books have you read then watched in a movie later, or the other way, what movie did you watch that you later decided to read the book.

After watching the first 4 Harry Potter books and seeing the previews for Order of the Phoenix I told my hubby I wanted to read the books. So one by one as I finished reading them we bought all 5 books. Then I got to watch Order of the Phoenix and I was quite sad at the stuff they left out pertaining to the quidditch and Ron and Hermoine being prefects. I've also watched The Firm and then read the book, I got left confused in a sense there because things we described a little different than they appeared in the movie! I also read Some Kind of Wonderful prior to watching the movie and I found that one followed the book very well!
I must agree with you about Tom Bombadil being left out of the LotR trilogy was kinda sad too. But over all its an excellent trilogy!

Usually, books will always better then the movie, because it is more detail in the description, and we can use our own imagination to imagine the story. I read all Harry Potter books, I love it. I watch all Harry Potter movies, and still waiting for more to be released. Currently I am reading The golden compass series. It is way much better than the movie. I am also reading the chronicles of spiderwick since there is a movie coming out as well.

I'm a big Steven King fan and have read some his books that were turned in to movies. After reading Dream Catcher I was wondering how they were going to pull some of that stuff off for a movie but they did great,
There was one book I read called Ice and I always thought it would make a good movie. It was about a guy who tried to tell everyone that the earth was freezing over and they wouldn't listen to him. I can't remember the author and when I try to look it up I keep finding another book by the same name but have never been able to find this particular one. Unfortunately the library got rid of some of their older books and no longer has it either.

I love the Earth's Children series by Jean Auel (Clan of the cave bear, etc) so I was exited to see that they had made it into a movie. I was very disappointed. They did a terrible job with the movie.
When I have the option of the book or the movie I prefer the book. Its much more fun when your using your own imagination to set the scene rather than relying on someone elses (like the director and producer)
I saw Lord of the rings and Harry Potter before I read the books so I did like those movies.

I have read a lot of books that have been turned into movies. I hve read the Harry Potter books and I have seen all the Harry Potter movies to date and I can't wait for the last couple to come out. I do enjoy the books more than the movies though I have also read A Time to Kill by John Grisham. In this case I actually liked the movie better. I don't know I guess it depends on the author and the producer and how well they work together.

Personally I think movies made from books are only good if you haven't read the book. I hated the Harry Potter movie's because they left so much out. I liked the lord of the rings movies because I hadn't read the books. I recently started reading the Fellowship of the Ring and would have liked them to have put in Tom Bombadil but I don't know what else they forgot because I didn't get much past there

Unfortunately, I just didn't like Harry Potter in general...after around the third or fourth book it just wasn't compelling to read anymore. I had a friend give me all the details of the deaths of th 7th book so I wouldn't have to read it. (:
I think it's possible to read the books AND like the movies - like Lord of the Rings. Awesome books, even better movies - the movies made the books come to life, which is what movies should be doing, not condensing and rearranging like Harry Potter does.

I've seen the Ocean's Eleven flick before I read the book. But I prefer the movie. In Harry Potter's case, I prefer the book than that of the movie. Same goes with Sense and Sensibility and The Piano. Sometimes the storyline is altered from the original.

No one even mentioned the lord of the rings? Great trilogy in terms of both book and movie and I do love them.

I only just read Hideaway this past year (truthfully I listened to the book on tape during my commutes). And as I was listening I realized I had seen the movie (with Jeff Goldblum) a few years before.
I cringe when I see a movie being made from a book I've already read. I understand there is only so much you can put into a 2 hour movie, but often there are drastic changes made to make things flow better in the movie. Like in the latest Harry Potter movie where they made Cho the squealer instead of her friend. They've done a decent enough job with the Harry Potter movies in my mind (I've read the books after seeing the movies). The Crichton and Grisham books I haven't read so I can't compare to the movies.
I think they did a great job converting IT from book to movie as well as Misery. The Mist I haven't seen yet but the commercials look like they try to follow pretty well (except one key point stood out for me - the book says the mist came in a perfectly straight line - a fact that made it stand out as strange and unusual - the movie just has regular fog) but I suppose that would be a bit difficult to recreate.
My favorite book - My Side of the Mountain - was made into a film (I remember watching it in school) and they did a good job with it. Except that the falcon is shot - I don't remember that in the book. Will have to find it again.
Well I could go on and on. So I'll stop here.
:D
