Having a credit card itself is not a bad thing its what you do with that credit card...that can get you in trouble because if you go out to some place and really put a big bill on the credit card well then you have to not only pay that back but you also have to pay a butt load of interest.....they really jack the prices up then....I think thats why your mom is warning you about them because she is scared that you will go out and buy things and not be able to pay for them and then that will make it hard for you to get any kind of credit

Credits cards are bad, period. If you really need the services offered by a card, go for debit cards. That way you will be spending money you have and not money which you haven't even earned.

I AGREE with you! I spent most of my life refusing to have Credit Cards, but was forced into it. Seems strange, but this is the scenario. I live on a small island, we have to leave for medical situations, hospital visits. Because we travel by ferry, sometimes our procedures are early in the morning. We have to leave the night before, and stay in a hotel. HOTELS/MOTELs refuse to take reservations without a Credit Card, I even tried booking early enought so that they could receive payment in advance. So many places now won't do business with you (e.g.) Car Rentals without Credit Cards.
But regarding debit cards, they can't be used over the phone! Is this a conspiracy by Credit Card Co.'s & banks.?

I am just learning this (thankfully sooner, rather than later!) But credit cards are of the devil! Seriously! They do no good. I think it's okay to have one for emergencies... Like real and true emergencies, not things like "I really want that CD..." Debit cards have the same capabilities as credit cards and are just as useful, except they don't rob you blind in interest! Some people say you need credit cards to build your credit score, but it can be done other ways, like with your bank account, and paying all of your bills on time. Stick with the debit cards and if you really need a credit card, then save it for emergencies ONLY!

Yes if you feel secure enough. You can have a pre-paid visa credit card which have only fixed amount of money in it.You can spend that much money only.It gives all features of normal credit cards. You can also get a virtual credit card.It is somewhat costly.I know a site which give virtual credit card worldwide. It is the same as pre-paid credit card.Tell this thing to your mother and she might allow you to get it.

i definatly do not recommend getting a credit card. i origionally got mine saying id use it for small purchases only.
1200$ later...
you dont realize how much you are spending or how high the interest rate is. or that you have to pay for special insurance on your card on top of the interest and the balance that is already there.
i suggest waiting until you have more experience and have established a career and no debt for student loans or whatnot before looking into getting a credit card.
i also dont think wanting a credit card because everyone else has one is a valid reason. if everyone wanted to jump off a bridge... well you know the rest

I would say don't get one. You don't need it if you have a debit card. If you are really stable in your finances, you can use one safely, but only if you keep careful track of all your purchases so you are completely sure you will be able to pay off the balance in full every single month. You can get airline miles I think if you are really good with certain Visa cards I think. But if you are at all concerned that you might have trouble paying in full or remembering to pay on time, don't do it, it really could ruin your life if your credit goes downhill. Bad credit has more disadvantages than most people even realize. I recently heard you can even have trouble getting an apartment if you have a bad credit score.

Your mother is right. It is better that you don't have one.The best way to buy something that you want or need is to save your money until you have enough money saved to buy it.If you don't have the money to buy something then you really shouldn't be able to obtain it.Just save your money then when you need something use the money saved. When you save your money and pay for things in cash it makes you feel good and that way you don't owe anyone.Having a credit card can put you into debt and it can ruin your life cause your always paying on them and then you never have enough money for anything else.I bet your co-workers are in debt and are struggling to pay their bills.I think credit cards are of the devil. The devil would love to see you in poverty.Your mother is telling you the truth. She is telling you this for your own good so you don't fall into the credit card trap. For anything you want to buy just save for it.Its better this way and it really feels good when you are paying cash and staying out of debt.
