I had my membranes stripped with I think at least two or three of my pregnancies. It really wasn't that awful, from what I can remember. When the nurses in the office heard I'd just had them stripped for the last baby, they all said 'Ooohhh, you better get right over to the hospital! You're going to deliver any time now!' My midwife looked at me and we just smiled. Obviously they weren't up enough on my history to know that it was going to be at *least* several more hours before I even thought of going into labor.
Why exactly did your dr decide to strip your membranes, if you don't mind my asking? And did he ask for permission before stripping them? My brain's sort of going to sleep now, but did I answer another of your discussions where you said you're right about 36 weeks? From what I understand, a dr will strip your membranes in order to get things moving along so labor will begin. . . soon. Like within a couple hours. It sure sounds like this dr wants you to deliver much sooner than later for some reason.

well, this was the other doctor I am right about 38 weeks now, I am so miserable and sick and I have two other little ones at home and he said the baby was a good size, and I think he stripped them so maybe I'd have a chance at being comfortable...but so far all it has done is give me cramps that hurt but arent regular. I have lost some pieces of the mucous plug, but that doesnt mean anything. So....who knows.

You poor thing! I was very blessed that I never had any real pain or discomfort when my membranes were stripped. It's good to know that baby seems to be big and healthy enough to go ahead and come early. I'll be thinking positive thoughts that you will start feeling better soon. :-)

I had my membranes stripped with my oldest daughter (almost 15 years ago). It did not spark labor, she was 7 days past our guess-a-date. And it was pretty uncomfortable both during the procedure & after.
Are you hoping to give labor a little push? Assuming you're in good health & there's no medical reason to rush labor, try gentler ways to get it going. They'll only work if you're ready and won't harm anything if you're not ready. Making love & nipple stimulation work really well, if you're body is ready. And not just a quickie in the hopes of starting labor, but hire a sitter & spend time with your partner- it may be some of the last alone time you have for awhile & it may get labor started.

Hi Stacy,
I had to look that up. I have never heard of such a thing while pregnant. Interesting what they do and what it means to have it done.

I would have to say ouch on this one! Yep, the Dr. stripped mine with my 3rd child. She said she thought the baby was big and didn't want me to go to full term which would have been 1 1/2 weeks later. I was in labor by 5am the next morning and delivered by 4:11pm. This was one of my worst deliveries and I think it was because we did not allow nature to take its course.
Good Luck...you will be delivering anytime now!

I got my membranes stripped with two of my four kids. The first time I gave birth 17 hours later. The second time it still two 2 days for me to go into labor.
