The Lord of the Rings is said to be the best fantasy book ever written. Is it really the best one? Was Tolkien a genious, the best fiction writer of all time?Or is the wide publicity given to the book and film(the trilogy)the only reason which made it so famous.

Well, have you ever actually read LOTR? I think if you do, you'll see why they got their reputation. It is fantastically complex, the characters are well drawn, it explores some of the great philosophical questions of the ages, and it has great fight scenes! What could compare?

I have to say that I enjoyed the films, but the book was a bit heavy going for me. I read a lot of books, but never really able to get into that one. I still have it somewhere as it's a first edition so I'm not getting rid of it any time soon!I think stephen king is under-rated as a fantasy author. His Dark Tower series is simply amazing.

I read the book for Lord of the rings and it was very good. I like the way Tolkien use the language. I dont know if his book is the best one but in my collection, he is number one.

I never read the book but I did watched the movie, I really loved the movie, I think without the movie it won't be so popular. I wouldn't know that there is a Lord of the Ring book without the movie.

I agree with the observation that world is divide in two kinds of people those who have read Lord Of the rings and those who have not.Your response to this one also seem to be divided like that. That book I agree is an epic and amzing and fantastic,Movie does not do any justice to it though,They failed to capture the magic of the book.I love that book madly.Infact the person from whom I borrowed the book had to really beg me to return it,he had bought that book for 50% of the cost and I used to tell him Take the full amount written on cover but let the book stay with me.I have never been able to buy the book but I wish I could possess that book forever and ever.

in my opinion, lord of the rings should be considered as an epic rather than as just another fantasy book...i believe that one of its kind has never been made before and is never, ever going to be made again...as for publicity, it has been given much less of it than, say Harry Potter or Star Wars and yet it has been widely appreciated...in fact, i think the book did not receive the appreciation that it truly deserves...

there is a reason that so much publicity was given to the book in the first place, that is because it is such a good book. As a piece of writing it may not be the best written novel ever, it can be difficult to get through at times, but it is without doubt the best story ever, and with more depth than anyother book ever written. I always recommend reading it, and its my favourite book, so in my opinion it is the best fantasy book ever written

I found the books in that series outdated and dull, the movies bored me as well...there are plenty of good fantasy writers, and he was good back in his day...but it just doesn't do it for me

Tolkien is a genious. Sure the books are a hard read for alot of people and because of the publicity of the movies have gotten alot of people to read the books. I think its great. I have been reading LOTR once a year for over 20years. So I for one am an avid fan of his works before all the publicity of the movies. Tolkien has been around along time, the books weren't made famous by the publicity of the movies, just got more people interested in actually reading them.
