I have had and trained dogs and worked with dogs for most of my life. The best way to go about it is crate training. It entails putting the dogs in a crate over a few days, feeding them in it and watering them in it. Dogs will not go to the bathroom where they sleep and eat. Here is an article I wrote on training your dog to ring a bell to let you know they have to go outside to potty. You don't have to do the bell, but it is a handy tool so you can hear them whenever they need to go.

I hope this helps. I've used this method for 30 years and it's always worked for me. Keep in mind though that older dogs sometimes take a little longer, and also that consistency is the key. Setting up regular feeding times, as well as watering, they learn that they have to do it outside.
