I have had and trained dogs and worked with dogs for most of my life. The best way to go about it is crate training. It entails putting the dogs in a crate over a few days, feeding them in it and watering them in it. Dogs will not go to the bathroom where they sleep and eat. I've used this method for 30 years and it's always worked for me. Keep in mind though that older dogs sometimes take a little longer, and also that consistency is the key. Setting up regular feeding times, as well as watering, they learn that they have to do it outside.

My cats refuse to use the litter box these days so I put down puppy pads and now they only use the puppy pads and not the litter box. Maybe your dogs would use a litter box?
